A 17-year-old girl who was last seen getting on a public bus in Surrey, B.C. has been found dead under suspicious circumstances, said RCMP.

Serena Vermeersch boarded a transit bus around 8 p.m. on Monday on the corner of 64th Avenue and 128th Street. She was reported missing several hours later. According to her family, the teen's disappearance was "out of character" and she had never gone missing before, said police.

Vermeersch's body was discovered on Tuesday evening in the 14600 block of 66th Avenue in Surrey.

Her death is "suspicious," said RCMP investigators. An autopsy scheduled for Thursday may provide more information about the nature of her death.

Police want to speak to anyone who was on that bus, or saw her disembark, they said in a news release on Wednesday.

Investigators also want to get in touch with a man seen on the railroad tracks at 66th Avenue and Hyland Road between 5 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. He was spotted leaving in a grey or silver pickup truck. "No description is available of this male; however, investigators believe he may have additional information to provide," said RCMP Sgt. Dale Carr.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP’s Serious Crime Unit at 604-599-0502, or Crime Stoppers, if they wish to remain anonymous, at 1-800-222-TIPS or on the group's website.
