A Surrey, B.C., teenager who was reported missing Tuesday has been found dead near railroad tracks in Surrey's East Newton neighbourhood, say RCMP.

The body of 17-year-old Serena Vermeersch was found Tuesday night in the 14600 block of 66 Avenue.

An autopsy to determine the cause of death is scheduled for Thursday morning, but police are treating the death as suspicious and are canvassing neighbours in the area for information.

RCMP are also looking for surveillance video that may reveal more information about Vermeersch's final hours.

Vermeersch was last seen alive on Monday night at 8:15 p.m. PT, as she boarded a transit bus at the corner of 128 Street and 64 Avenue.

"Investigators are looking to speak to anyone that may have been on that bus and saw Serena or would have seen her disembark the bus," said Surrey RCMP in a written statement.

Police say the five-foot-eight-inch, 135-pound teen would have been wearing a blue tank top and black shorts.

Investigators would also like to speak with a man seen on the railroad tracks in the area of 66 Avenue and Hyland Road between 5 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. Tuesday night. He was seen leaving in a grey or silver pickup truck.

Anyone with further information is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP’s Serious Crime Unit at 604-599-0502 and quote file #2014-133961.

Should the caller wish to remain anonymous, tips can also be made to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or www.solvecrime.ca.
