U.S. President Barack Obama will deliver an address at 9 p.m. ET to assure Americans that the U.S. is capable of destroying the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the group that is violently attempting to establish an Islamic state in the region.
The U.S. has conducted more than 130 airstrikes against ISIS targets since early August. Obama said the decision was necessary to protect American lives and interests.
Obama is expected to elaborate upon an expanded military plan and to urge Congress to expedite his authority to arm Syrian opposition forces, reported the Associated Press.
It is unclear if Obama needs Congress' permission for whatever his plan may hold.
Obama faced criticism in August when he said he did not yet have a strategy for combating ISIS despite having already launched airstrikes in the region.
