Hydro-Québec crews are restoring power to tens of thousands of customers after strong winds buffeted southern Quebec Tuesday night, downing branches and power lines.

In Montreal overnight wind gusts were as strong as 80 km/h and in Sorel-Tracy, east of Montreal, winds reached up to 95 km/h, according to Environment Canada.

Across Quebec about 36,000 households and businesses were without power Wednesday morning. The most significant concentration of outages was in the Montreal area, where 13,000 customers are affected.

In the Montreal region, the worst hit areas include the city centre, where more than 4,000 are affected, and in Pierrefonds, where more than 3,000 are without power.

Kirkland also experienced significant outages, with close to 2,000 Hydro-Québec customers in the dark.

In Laval, close to 6,000 Hydro-Québec customers are without power.
