Lavish tables strewn with food for what seems like miles may look overly indulgent to our 21st-century eyes, but the 15-century types who used to eat them would probably have something to say about modern diets too.

In a new photo series, Italian photographer Dan Bannino has captured the often extreme diets of the celebs we know and love, with an almost elegant twist.

"My aim was to capture the beauty that lies in this terrible constriction of diets and deprivation, giving them the importance of an old master’s painting," he explains on his site. "I wanted to make them significant, like classic works of arts that are becoming more and more weighty as they grow older. My aim was to show how this weirdness hasn’t changed even since the 15th century."

In the nine-part series, Bannino recreates everything from Beyonce's cleansing diet to King Henry VIII's meat-heavy lifestyle. Bannino said he used the old master's techniques to give importance to each shot, reports the Daily Mail.

He even includes poet Lord Byron and nobleman Luigi Cornaro, who were considered celebrities of their time.

"Diets are something that makes them more 'human'... We're all human beings, even if we're sitting on the throne of England or if our husband is Jay Z!" Bannino said to the Daily Beast.

And while we may be used to reading about our favourite celebs taking part in crazy diets, we'd be remiss if we didn't mention that most of these diets should not be attempted for weight loss or cleansing. Always consult with an health expert before making any significant changes.
