Since he first picked up sticks and sat down at a kit, drummer Nick Yacyshyn looked up to Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl as one of his biggest musical idols.

The Vancouver musician found out this week about a new super fan — Grohl.

"I got a text from my buddy and at that point I had no idea," said Yacyshyn.

"I checked it out and from there, started internally freaking out," he said.

"It was a real shock."

Grohl heard Yacyshyn's work in the latest live video from his hardcore band Baptists.

After hearing the local drummer laying it down at Vancouver's Raincity Recorders with the rest of his band mates, Grohl posted "Drummers Beware" with a link to the video on the Foo Fighters facebook page.

That page has more than 10 million likes, meaning the video has since gone from having 2,000 views to more than 36,000.

"Dave has been a big time influence of mine and he's up there and one of the guys I absolutely look up to as far as musicians and just as one of the best drummers of all time," said Yacyshyn.

"When you're a kid and you listen to Nirvana, it blows your mind and I was into Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age too."

But the love of Yacyshyn's drumming didn't stop there. Grohl sent a text message to Greg Anderson, the head of Baptists record label Southern Lord.

"Nick is my favourite new drummer, by a mile," Anderson said the text read.

Yacyshyn is still so surprised by the admiration from one of the world's biggest rock stars, that he's not even sure whether to believe it or not.

"I swear I'm being punked," he said.

"It's still hard to believe."

And as far as the doors that are opened by this love from the legend, Yacyshyn still isn't sure, but he hopes to meet Grohl one day.

Yacyshyn's band Baptists, which features vocalist Andrew Drury, guitarist Danny Marshall, and bassist Sean Hawryluk, is currently in pre-production for its second full-length studio album which it will be recording with famed hardcore producer Kurt Ballou at his Godcity Studios in Massachusetts in April. The band plays live at the Astoria on March 14th.
