Spanking Ban: France Joins 51 Countries In Unpopular Decision

Since Sweden first banned corporal punishment back in 1979, 51 other countries have joined this stance on spanking kids as discipline. Now France is number 52.

The “Equality and Citizenship” bill passed just before Christmas, on Dec. 22, 2016, which makes corporal punishment a civil offence. The law also bans any punishment of children that is “cruel, degrading, or humiliating including any use of physical violence.”

According to recent polls, this new law will not go down well with parents. The Telegraph reports that 60 per cent of French adults are against a spanking ban. In fact, 85 per cent say they still smack their kids.

But experts are applauding France.

“It lays the foundation for a culture of respect for children's rights; safeguards children's dignity and physical integrity; and encourages positive discipline and education of children through non-violent means," says Marta Santos Pais who is the special representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on Violence against Children.

In Canada, spanking is currently legal. However, the Liberal government promised to pass all of the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which includes removing Section 43 of the Canadian Criminal Code.

This sections, known as the "spanking law," states:

"Every schoolteacher, parent or person standing in the place of a parent is justified in using force by way of correction toward a pupil or child, as the case may be, who is under his care, if the force does not exceed what is reasonable under the circumstances."

After 50 years of research, a June 2016 study revealed that children who are spanked are more likely to disobey their parents -- the exact opposite result parents are aiming for. They are also more likely to have mental and cognitive challenges as adults.

Golden Globes 2017: Lola Kirke Subtly Stole The Show With Her Armpit Hair And 'F**k Paul Ryan' Pin

The 2017 Golden Globes now seem like a distant memory.

But now that we've celebrated the winners from Sunday evening and watched that clip of Emma Stone awkwardly hugging "La La Land" director Damien Chazelle about one hundred times, it's time to talk about an actress who subtly got political on the red carpet.

Wearing a pastel pink Andrew Gn gown covered in embroidered flowers, "Mozart in the Jungle" actress Lola Kirke accessorized her look unlike any other: with a small pin that read "Fuck Paul Ryan."

In an interview with Elle, the 26-year-old explained why she decided to wear the pin.

"Paul Ryan is talking about defunding Planned Parenthood. I think that, along with a number of other decisions that are being talked about being made by the new administration, is atrocious," she explained.

"As a person with a platform, no matter what size it is, I think it's important to share your views and maybe elevate people that might agree with you, that maybe won't feel like they can have the same voice. My body my choice, your body your choice."

And if you thought Lola's pin was just something she threw on last minute to make a statement, think again.

According to Kirke — who's the younger sister of "Girls" star Jemima Kirke — the "Fuck Ryan Paul" accessory was custom made for her dress, matching the pink tones of the gown.

"My stylist and her son made them for me," she told Elle. "They made me one in the Planned Parenthood colours yesterday that I was wearing. I'm sure there will be other issues to support, but this one is really important."

Yup, Meryl Streep wasn't the only one to make a political statement at the award show.

Lola's awesome pin may have stolen the show, but we're also applauding the actress for ditching traditional beauty standards on the red carpet by flaunting her armpit hair.

"Ok! Now I'm really ready. Thanks to all you beautiful people who didn't send me death threats on account of my #awesome #hairyarmpits! You rule," Kirke wrote on Instagram.

Continue to do you, girl. We love it.

People Who Exercise On Weekends Have A Lower Risk Of Dying: Study

People who exercise mainly on the weekends can reap big benefits for their health, including a significantly lower risk of dying from cancer and heart disease than people who don't exercise at all, researchers said Monday.

Currently, experts recommend that people do 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week, or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise.

But no consensus has been reached on just how often a person needs to exercise, and whether activities should be done daily or condensed into one or two days.

exercise weekends

The findings in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Internal Medicine showed there is a benefit for people who pack all of their exercise into one or two days of the week and are often referred to as "weekend warriors."

On average, these weekend warriors tended to be men and averaged 300 minutes of weekly exercise in one or two days, said the study.

Comparing weekend warriors to inactive adults, researchers found that those who exercised just one or two days a week saw about a 30 per cent lower risk of dying.

The risk of cardiovascular death for weekend warriors was 40 per cent lower and the risk of cancer death was 18 per cent lower than among inactive adults.

weekend workout

"It is very encouraging news that being physically active on just one or two occasions per week is associated with a lower risk of death, even among people who do some activity but don't quite meet recommended exercise levels," said senior author Emmanuel Stamatakis, associate professor at the University of Sydney.

"However, for optimal health benefits from physical activity it is always advisable to meet and exceed the physical activity recommendations."

The study stopped short of proving cause and effect.

It was based on nearly 64,000 people who filled out health surveys in Britain, and relied on self-reported exercise intensity and duration.

Researchers also cautioned that since 90 per cent of the respondents were white, the benefits of weekend exercise might not be generalizable to the entire population.

Alberta's notorious "Dexter Killer" is looking to find love online.

Mark Twitchell, currently serving life in prison for murdering a man in his Edmonton garage, has set up an online dating profile using Canadian Inmates Connect Ltd.

In his profile, he admits he's "made some terrible, regrettable choices in the past" and how he's come to accept the consequences.

Tennis, chess and story-telling as a few of his interests, according to his dating profile. Twitchell also adds that he enjoys the music of Sia, Arcade Fire and Jackie Evancho.

"I'm insightful, passionate and philosophical with a great sense of humor."

Fascination with 'Dexter'

In 2011, Twitchell was found guilty in the first-degree murder of 38-year-old Johnny Altinger. Altinger thought he was going to meet a woman he met online when he showed up at the killer's home.

Instead, he was ambushed by Twitchell, clobbered and stabbed in a kill room.

Twitchell's headline-grabbing trial heard how he had a fascination with the TV show "Dexter" and the lead character Dexter Morgan, who works by day as a police blood spatter analyst, but murders in the name of vigilante justice by night.

During his trial, court heard how Twitchell, a film maker and TV and film buff, followed his own movie script in killing and dismembering Altinger.

Twitchell's dating profile says he passes time at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary crafting "novels or screenplays to manifest my relentless imagination."

Dating site founder: Everyone deserves second chance

Canadian Inmates Connect Ltd. is run by Melissa Fazzina in Toronto, and requires an application and annual $35 fee. Fazzina said she created the site in 2012 because she believes everyone deserves a second chance.

NORTH BAY, Ont. — Humane society officials say a woman is facing charges after hundreds of rats were removed from a one-bedroom apartment in North Bay, Ont.

North Bay and District Humane Society spokesman Daryl Vaillancourt says "most'' of the rats were running free in the apartment when inspectors went there on Dec. 16, 2016, to investigate a report of a large number of domestic rats being kept in an apartment.

Vaillancourt says the woman voluntarily surrendered nearly 600 rats, which were removed from the apartment over several days.

The rats were transferred to other humane societies and Ontario SPCA animal centres across the province where they will be sent to new homes.

A 51-year-old woman is to appear in North Bay court on Feb. 3 to face four Ontario SPCA Act charges.

She is accused of permitting distress, failing to provide sanitary living conditions, failing to provide care necessary for general welfare, and failing to provide adequate and appropriate medical attention.

Maintain Weight Loss: How This Woman Lost One Pound A Week, And Kept It Of

Who: Sonika Anand
City: Calgary

The Numbers: Currently at 179 pounds, for a total weight loss of 16 pounds in 15 weeks. Went from a size 14 to a size 10.

After Losing The Weight: The hardest thing about maintaining weight is to have control over how much you eat and learning what to eat.

Since I've lost weight, my family and friends have been seeing changes in how I look and also I feel more energetic.

Before seeing my trainer Belinda Morrison, my glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) was 7.2 and within four months, I got it down to six.

I went from being diabetic to pre-diabetic and my doctor calls it a "miracle."

I feel so confident about myself and I want to lose even more weight to take diabetes out of my life forever.

The Food Element: I am cutting down on my sugar intake and I keep my calories in check.

For breakfast, I usually eat oats or eggs and whole wheat toast. For lunch, I eat chicken and curry or salads. And for dinner, I prefer soups and some vegetables.

"I am very happy with my results and don't feel like going back to my old habits."

I keep adding fish and chicken to my meals for protein.

sonika anand

I also have cheat days, but within moderation. I make sure my portions are also in check.

The Exercise Factor: I work out with my trainer three times a week and do high intensity interval training at home.

I also try to hit 10,000 steps a day.

For sleep, I get around seven to eight hours a night.

Words From Her Trainer: Sonika came to me for one reason: her doctor was very concerned about her HbA1c number, and so was she.

It is not unheard of that clients come see me for medical reasons, and not just to look good in a bathing suit. She wanted to know if I could help her take her numbers down.

sonika anand

I put her on a meal plan, the proper exercise plan and told her we would take it slow. I explained to her that losing between one to two pounds a week is optimal for maintaining lean muscle mass, which is what you want for a higher metabolism.

Polar Bears In Jeopardy Over Climate Change: U.S. Fish And Wildlife Service

You've probably seen a photo of a sad and confused polar bear near a tiny ice floe, desperately searching for food.

The image has become a symbol of climate change's devastating effect on Arctic wildlife populations, and as the U.S. government confirmed Monday, the devastation is all too real.

hungry polar bearNorwegian news photographer Stein J Bjoerge captured a young male eating birds and eggs from nests at Magdalenafjord at Spitsbergen.

The U.S. Fish And Wildlife Service said rapid loss of sea ice is jeopardizing the polar bear's future.

"Its fate is not determined by the stars, but by our willingness and ability to address climate change."

Polar bears were first listed as a threatened species in 2008 due to melting sea ice. The department estimated the current polar bear population is about 26,000.

If greenhouse-gas emissions continue at current levels, polar bears could become extinct by the end of the 21st century, the department says.

The World Wildlife Foundation says since polar bears can move across long distances, they might be able to adapt to ongoing geographic changes in their environment.

But their reliance on sea ice for traveling, hunting prey, and mating makes them vulnerable to climate change.

Melting sea ice is also changing polar bears' behaviours, according to National Geographic.

They're eating different foods, spending more time ashore during the summertime, and even storing leftover food for later.

Russia Denies Having Compromising Information On Donald Trump

MOSCOW — A spokesman for President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday denied allegations that the Kremlin has collected compromising information about U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, deriding the claim as a "complete fabrication and utter nonsense.''

"This is an evident attempt to harm our bilateral ties,'' Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in Moscow. "The Kremlin does not engage in collecting compromising information.''

A U.S. official told The Associated Press on Tuesday that intelligence officials had informed Trump about an unsubstantiated report that Russia had compromising personal and financial information about him. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the official was not allowed to publicly discuss the matter.

After news reports were published about the briefing, Trump tweeted: "FAKE NEWS - A TOTAL POLITICAL WITCH HUNT!''

Peskov dismissed the report but commented that the allegations could be used to keep American politicians from wanting to improve ties with Russia.

"We should treat it with humour, but there is a sad side to it, too,'' he said. "There are people who are whipping up this frenzy, who are doing their best to keep this witch hunt going.''

Peskov described the report as part of efforts to "keep harming the relations, not allow anyone to think about whether this is in the interests of both countries, the interests of the global community and what can be done to move from a total confrontation to a more constructive approach.''

Russian state television provided a muted coverage of the report, dismissing it as fake and pointing to its release timed to Barack Obama's final speech in Chicago.

"The release would help Obama to slam the door even louder,'' Rossiya 24 television said on an afternoon news bulletin. Noting that different sections of the report were written in different typefaces, "it does not look like it was compiled by professionals,'' Rossiya 24 said.

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland Not Held Back By Lack Of Diplomacy

$

OTTAWA — At a glance, Chrystia Freeland's background in deconstructing the world's super-wealthy and pugnaciously critiquing Russia's president wouldn't appear to be an ideal resume for the job as Canada's top diplomat dealing with Donald Trump's White House.

But as the former journalist was elevated to the post Tuesday by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at a critical moment in global relations, even her Opposition critic across the parliamentary aisle couldn't find a bad word to say.

Freeland, 48, was the marquee move in Trudeau's nine-person, six-portfolio cabinet shuffle and she brings far more to the role than an ahistoric Y-chromosome.

Though she is the first Liberal woman in the role, Freeland is Canada's third female foreign affairs minister — behind Flora MacDonald, who broke the glass ceiling in 1979, and Progressive Conservative Barbara MacDougall's two-year stint from 1991 to 1993.

chrystia freelandChrystia Freeland was an acknowledged rising star for the Liberals as international trade minister this past year. (Photo: CP)

Given Freeland's colourful resume, that gendered factoid wasn't even on the radar.

The Oxford-educated Rhodes Scholar was an acknowledged rising star for the Liberals as international trade minister this past year, doggedly completing the CETA trade agreement with the European Union begun by the previous Conservative government. Freeland then graciously shared the credit with her predecessors.

The prime minister said Freeland's economic credentials made her an ideal choice to replace Liberal veteran Stephane Dion, who has been offered a diplomatic post abroad.

"One the things we've seen from president-elect Trump is that he very much takes a trade and job lens to his engagements with this world in international diplomacy,'' Trudeau said at an afternoon press scrum on Parliament Hill.

"I am a very strong supporter of our government's view that it is important to engage with all countries around the world — very much including Russia.''

"It makes sense for the person who is responsible for foreign relations with the United States to also have the ability and the responsibility to engage with issues such as NAFTA and the broad range of trade issues that we'll be facing with our friends and neighbours south of the border.''

Trudeau added that Canada is "one of the few countries these days that seems to be very much pro-trade.''

Freeland, speaking in French — one of her five languages and the one in which, she said, she's least fluent — said the Canada-U.S. relationship is this country's closest and most important in the world.

She denied that her incisive deconstruction of the planet's super-wealthy in her 2012 best-selling book "Plutocrats: The Rise of the New Global Super-Rich and the Fall of Everyone Else'' constitutes "baggage'' in dealing with a Trump administration packed with billionaires.

chrystia freeland justin trudeauChrystia Freeland was the marquee move in Trudeau's nine-person, six-portfolio cabinet shuffle. (Photo: CP)

Rather, Freeland asserted that the Liberal government's oft-repeated preoccupation with the middle class is not unlike Trump's campaign admonitions to make the economy work for average Americans.

Freeland acknowledged Canadian officials, herself included, have had a number of meetings with the Trump transition team but she stressed the United States "has only one president at a time.''

She said the meetings to date involve "laying the groundwork for some personal relationships.''

Is on Putin's sanctions list

But it is Freeland's fractious relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin that makes her such an intriguing choice.

The Russian and Ukrainian-speaking granddaughter of Ukrainian emigrants was among a dozen Canadians put on a Russian sanctions list in 2014 as part of Putin's tit-for-tat response to Western sanctions following Russian-backed military incursions into Crimea.

Freeland has called Putin, whom she interviewed during her four years as a Moscow correspondent, an authoritarian, an autocrat and a "really dangerous'' force on the international scene.

"I'm not sure what practical impact her ban in Russia will have.''

"I know Russia well,'' Freeland said Tuesday.

"I lived in Moscow for four years and really, really enjoyed it and I have a really deep love for the Russian language and Russian culture. I am a very strong supporter of our government's view that it is important to engage with all countries around the world — very much including Russia.''

She said her background leaves her "well-positioned'' to be part of the government's Russian engagement — notwithstanding her name on Putin's sanctions list.

"That's up to Moscow,'' she said.

chrystia freelandThe prime minister said Freeland's economic credentials made her an ideal choice to replace Liberal veteran Stephane Dion, who has been offered a diplomatic post abroad. (Photo: CP)

The first response from Putin's representatives in Canada was not antagonistic.

"We hope that the Canadian government will follow its stated intention to further re-engage with Russia in areas of common interest,'' Kirill Kalinin, a spokesman for the Embassy of Russia, said in an email.

"We are open to develop bilateral relations on the basis of mutual respect and reciprocity.''

Peter Kent, the Conservative foreign affairs critic, said he hopes Freeland sticks to her guns.

"Chrystia has the smarts, she has the skills, she has the personality, she has the background to be a strong representative of principled Canadian foreign policy and I just hope that she doesn't fall into line with what we consider to be the prime minister's misguided foreign policy positions,'' Kent said in a telephone interview.

peter kentConservative foreign affairs critic Peter Kent said he hopes Freeland sticks to her guns. (Photo: CP)

There are "apparent strong differences'' between Freeland and Donald Trump's assessment of Putin, Kent continued, but he said Freeland should be able to champion issues such as softwood lumber, the Keystone XL pipeline and NAFTA without moderating her opinions of the Russian leader.

Veronica Kitchen, an international relations expert at the Balsillie School of International Affairs in Waterloo, Ont., called Freeland a good choice "especially in a world where trade barriers may be going up again.''

"She knows that portfolio both practically and professionally,'' Kitchen wrote in an email. "I'm not sure what practical impact her ban in Russia will have.''

Freeland, a mother of three who now calls Toronto home, will have a heavy travel load on her plate — but she's already experienced life on the road in her job as international trade minister and as an international economics journalist.

chrystia freeland martin schulzA Washington researcher said Chrystia Freeland's biggest strength is "conveying complex and often frustrating realities about what's going on abroad to Canadians." (Photo: Shutterstock)

Christopher Sands, a Canada-watcher at the Washington-based Center for Strategic International Studies, said he sees Freeland's biggest asset as her ability at domestic communications.

"Canada's going to have to be flexible and try to navigate what could be a period of real rapid change, maybe a bit of return to great power conflict with China and so forth,'' said Sands.

"But I would say her first and foremost strength — as she showed with CETA — is conveying complex and often frustrating realities about what's going on abroad to Canadians so that they feel confident that Canadian international engagement is good.''

Canadian Mortgage Fraud Spikes 52% As Home Prices Soar

House prices in Canada’s hottest cities are soaring, but the pressure to buy a home remains. The result? Mortgage fraud is spiking.

Most of the increase in mortgage fraud has taken place in Ontario and British Columbia, credit agency Equifax says in a new report. Those are the provinces that have seen double-digit price jumps in certain cities.

Two-thirds of the mortgages flagged as suspicious were in Ontario, while 12 per cent were in B.C.

Mortgage fraud increases the risks in a housing market, because it means some homebuyers are taking on more debt than they will be able to pay off. That poses a threat to banks and the entire financial system.

"We're certainly seeing more mortgage applications being flagged as suspicious by our reporting institutions," said Tara Zecevic, VP of customer insight at Equifax Canada, in a statement.

"While we cannot entirely attribute these increases to consumers overstating personal income or falsifying applications, we do want to remind people that there are serious consequences for making false or inaccurate claims on any loan or mortgage applications. Not only will it stretch your finances, it is in breach of your contractual obligations with the lender, and simply put, it's against the law."

Overall, Equifax saw a 52-per-cent jump in suspicious mortgages between 2013 and 2016.

"Simply put, it's against the law."
— Equifax Canada VP Tara Zecevic, on mortgage fraud

A survey the credit agency carried out found that 13 per cent of Canadians say it’s okay to tell “a little white lie” on a mortgage application, while 16 per cent said mortgage fraud is a victimless crime.

Overall, eight per cent admitted to misrepresenting facts on a credit or loan application.

Toronto’s housing market set yet another sales record in 2016, with home prices in the region spiking some 20 per cent over the course of the year.

Amid a new foreign buyer tax and a crackdown by the Chinese government on money leaving China, Vancouver’s market has softened. Sales there have been falling for the past half a year.

Portman tells Marie Claire she knew about the pay difference at the time the film was being made, but wasn't as miffed as she should have been. She tells the magazine, "we get paid a lot, so it's hard to complain, but the disparity is crazy.''

The 35-year-old says she doesn't "think women and men are more or less capable. We just have a clear issue with women not having opportunities.'' She says women need to "be part of the solution, not perpetuating the problem.''

Kutcher's representatives didn't immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

Courtney Gelinas, Ontario Girl, Reunited With Teddy Bear After Fort Lauderdale Shooting

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Yards from where workers finished the cleanup from the Fort Lauderdale airport shooting, a girl was reunited Tuesday with the teddy bear she left behind while fleeing.

Courtney Gelinas, 10, smiled as Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport spokesman Greg Meyer opened the trunk of his SUV to reveal Rufus, the teddy bear the Windsor, Ontario, fifth grader had received from her dying grandfather a decade ago. When Meyer handed her Rufus, she held the bear tight.

Courtney was with her parents and siblings and about to board a plane home when officials say Esteban Santiago fatally shot five people one floor below them Friday. Rufus, a brown bear dressed in a red devil costume, was left behind as the family fled onto the tarmac with hundreds of others. Her mother, Kim Lariviere, said Courtney has not slept well since.

"It is exciting and I am happy to have him back,'' the bashful girl said as she pressed against her mother's legs.

courtney gelinasCourtney Gelinas talks with the news media after being reunited with her bear Rufus, at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Tuesday. (Photo: AP via CP)

The airport has returned a "substantial'' portion of the 25,000 stranded items left behind by fleeing passengers, including luggage, cellphones, baby strollers and "lots of Hello Kitty backpacks,'' Meyer said.

The airport was nearly back to normal Tuesday. The long lines from the weekend caused by delayed flights are gone. Only the area around the baggage carousel where the shooting happened remained sealed off as workers replaced carpeting, Meyer said.

Santiago, a 26-year-old Iraq war veteran with the Puerto Rico National Guard, remains jailed without bond on federal charges. Santiago, who had been living in Alaska, could face the death penalty if convicted. Officials say he had arrived on a connecting flight from Anchorage, retrieved his gun from its checked carrying case and began randomly shooting people.

Courtney lost Rufus in the confusion. Lariviere, a middle school teacher, said she, her husband, firefighter Locky Gelinas, and their other daughter, 7-year-old Kacie, had come to the airport to return from a holiday cruise to the Caribbean. They had settled near the gate for their flight to Detroit, Windsor's neighbouring city, when Lariviere said "a rush of people screaming for their lives came like a tsunami at us. We threw our children under our seats and we lay on top of them.''

courtney gelinasCourtney Gelinas was traveling home with her family after a Caribbean cruise. (Photo: AP via CP)

After a about a minute, Lariviere said her husband decided they needed to run, so they went down a jetway and then took stairs to the tarmac. After about an hour, they were allowed back into the terminal only to have to flee again minutes later when false rumours of another gunman caused another stampede to the exits.

She said the family split from the mass, feeling that would be safer, and began walking around the airport's perimeter until they found a hole in the fence and a police officer let them through. They walked to a small rental car office, where the employees helped about 40 people who had fled the airport book hotels and drove them there.

She said Courtney felt so much stress Friday night, she vomited "all over the floor'' even though she hadn't eaten.

She said she never lost hope that they would find Rufus, "but we are in a hotel with nothing. Everything we are wearing is from Walmart. We knew he had to be here somewhere. It was just a matter of waiting.''

"I don't think we are going to see normal for a while."

She said it was unnerving to return to the airport and pass by the black curtains shielding the area where the shootings happened.

"It could have been anybody down there. My deepest respect and condolences to all of you who are without their grandmothers and their moms and their brothers, uncles and aunts,'' Lariviere said, weeping.

She said she and her husband have been open and honest with their daughters about what happened so they wouldn't find out about it when they return to school.

"I don't think we are going to see normal for a while. I don't think it has registered what we went through on Friday because we are still here, still living it. I think when we get home, we'll feel it,'' she said.

Red Meat Linked To Common Bowel Disease: Study

A diet rich in red meat has been linked to a heightened risk of a bowel inflammation called diverticulitis, according to a study published Tuesday.

The findings do not constitute evidence that meat is what causes the ailment, researchers said, but ought to be considered in designing healthier diets.

red meat

Diverticulitis is a common condition which occurs when small pockets lining the intestine — called diverticula — become irritated.

It accounts for some 200,000 hospital admissions every year in the United States alone, at an annual cost of about $2 billion (1.9 billion euros).

New cases are on the rise, especially among young people.

About four per cent of those affected develop severe or long-term symptoms, such as piercing of the gut wall, abscesses, and fistula, the abnormal joining together of hollow spaces within the body.

Despite its prevalence and impact, little is known about what causes diverticulitis, though previous research found links to smoking, obesity and chronic use of anti-inflammation drugs.

A lack of fibre in the diet has also been a suspect, but other possible food-related causes have remained untested.

steak

For the new study, published in the journal Gut, researchers led by Andrew Chan at Massachusetts General Hospital combed through 26 years of medical records for 46,500 men in the United States.

Every four years, the men were asked to detail their intake of fish, poultry and red meat.

Over the 26-year period, 764 men developed diverticulitis. This group tended to eat a lot of red meat.

They also smoked more, exercised less, and took more painkillers than others in the trial, the study found.

But after these other disease risks were taken into account, the meat-eaters were nearly 60 per cent more likely to be afflicted by the condition than men who ate the least amount red meat, the study found.

The link was purely observational, meaning that no cause-and-effect can be shown, and that something else may be to blame.

But the evidence may be useful as "practical dietary guidance" for people at risk of diverticulitis, the authors said.

Sasha Obama Has Valid Reason For Missing Dad's Farewell Speech

While everyone was crying over Barack Obama’s farewell speech in Chicago on Tuesday night, Twitter was busy investigating #WhereIsSasha.

The U.S. president’s wife, Michelle, and his 18-year-old daughter Malia were seen sitting in the front row during his address, but Obama’s youngest, 15-year-old Sasha, was clearly missing in action.

On Twitter, some hoped Sasha was trying to stop Donald Trump from getting into the White House.

Turns out, Sasha had a valid excuse for missing her father’s farewell speech (although it was not what Twitter had hoped): she had an exam the next morning.

According to BBC News, the teen is a student at Sidwell Friends private school, which is the same school a number of other presidents have sent their children.

While Sasha’s excuse made sense, Twitter users still couldn’t believe it.

And some argued that it wasn’t right to let the 15-year-old miss Obama’s speech after eight years in the White House.

But despite her absence, Obama spoke fondly of both his daughters during his speech.

“Malia and Sasha, under the strangest of circumstances, you have become two amazing young women, smart and beautiful, but more importantly, kind and thoughtful and full of passion,” he said. “You wore the burden of years in the spotlight so easily. Of all that I've done in my life, I'm most proud to be your dad.”

Cue the tears. We’ll miss you, Obama!

Capitalism Needs A Major Overhaul, World Economic Forum Report Says

LONDON — Reforming the very nature of capitalism will be needed to combat the growing appeal of populist political movements around the world, the World Economic Forum said Wednesday.

Getting higher growth levels, it added, is necessary but insufficient to heal the fractures in society that were evident in the election of Donald Trump as U.S. president and Britain's vote to leave the European Union.

In a wide-ranging report from the organizer of the annual gathering of political and business leaders in the Swiss resort of Davos, the WEF identified "rising income and wealth disparity" as potentially the biggest driver in global affairs over the next ten years.

As an example of this growing inequality, the WEF highlighted the massive increases in CEO pay at a time when many people in advanced economies have struggled to make ends meet following the global financial crisis.

"This points to the need for reviving economic growth, but the growing mood of anti-establishment populism suggests we may have passed the stage where this alone would remedy fractures in society: reforming market capitalism must also be added to the agenda,'' it said in its latest Global Risks Report.

"The combination of economic inequality and political polarization threatens to amplify global risks, fraying the social solidarity on which the legitimacy of our economic and political systems rests,'' it added.

That's some conclusion from an organization that's sought to play a central role in the globalization process of the past couple of decades and that is closely identified with some of the world's richest people.

"Some people question whether the West has reached a tipping point and might now embark on a period of de-globalization."

As well as getting growth higher, the WEF identified four areas that need to be addressed urgently: the need for long-term thinking in capitalism; a recognition of the importance of identity and inclusiveness in political communities; mitigating the risks and exploiting the opportunities of new technologies such as driverless cars; and strengthening global co-operation.

It added that a failure to address the underlying sources of the populist tide poses a threat to mainstream politicians and raises the risk that the globalization trend will go into reverse.

"Some people question whether the West has reached a tipping point and might now embark on a period of de-globalization,'' it said.

Although anti-establishment politics have tended to blame globalization for the loss of traditional jobs, the WEF said rapidly changing technologies have had more of an impact on labour markets.

"It is no coincidence that challenges to social cohesion and policymakers' legitimacy are coinciding with a highly disruptive phase of technological change,'' the WEF said.

Other key drivers identified in the survey of global risks related to climate change, rising cyber dependency and an aging population.

The 2017 report, the 12th annual report, is based on an assessment of 30 global risks by 750 experts from a variety of backgrounds, including business, academia and non-governmental organizations.

Does All That Cough Medicine Actually Work? Maybe Not

If you have a cold, chances are you're most likely going to reach for cough syrup to help you heal.

But although cough syrup is a billion dollar industry, over-the-counter cough syrup may not be effective at all, according to a recent video by science YouTube channel Reactions.

The video notes that after looking at 19 different studies, 15 of the studies concluded there either was no benefit to using this type of medicine or the results were conflicting, Cosmo reports.

"Carefully performed clinical trials show that these medications are generally no better than a placebo," the video adds.

But other experts say cough syrup can help relieve symptoms of a cold.

The video also mentions cough syrup can also help you sleep better at night.

And of course, there are other common treatments many people try when they're sick, which help alleviate the symptoms: drinking a lot of fluids, taking hot showers and using a humidifier.

Victoria Beckham Pens An Open Letter To Her 18-Year-Old Self For British Vogue

Victoria Beckham just got candid about her imperfections.

For British Vogue, the mother-of-four penned a letter to her 18-year-old self with "advice on how to survive a life in the spotlight," touching upon body image, the Spice Girls, husband David Beckham, and more.

The 42-year-old began her letter by addressing her struggles as a teen, trying to fit in at school while being bullied for her weight, looks and skin. But even though these moments were hard for her growing up, VB wrote that she wishes she had learned to embrace her imperfections as a young girl.

"Let your skin breathe; wear less make-up. (And don’t ever let that make-up artist shave your eyebrows! The effects last forever.) You will always be addicted to Elnett hairspray but you will tone it down. Less of the 'Hello! I just got stuck in a wind tunnel', please," she wrote.

"And I should probably say, don’t mess with your boobs. All those years I denied it – stupid. A sign of insecurity. Just celebrate what you’ve got."

Beckham, who was just named OBE in the Queen's New Year Honours List, also credited the Spice Girls ("four other girls, all misfits in their own ways") for allowing her to find her confidence, saying if she hadn't joined the band that she "might always be that insecure person in that little shell."

But the British fashion designer admitted that even as a mother and a successful business woman, she is still "hugely self-critical" and constantly "uptight." She also noted that her present-self has to learn to enjoy herself a little more and "be less image-conscious."

Perhaps the most interesting section of the letter is her stance on marriage and how she presents herself to David, the man who made her believe "love at first sight does exist."

"Preserve a bit of mystique," Victoria wrote. "Never let yourself go completely (at least brush your hair, clean your teeth, have a bit of a brow going on because you will always want him to look at you and feel attracted)."

We could all learn a thing or two from VB.

Obama Farewell Address: Beautiful Reason Malia Was Moved To Tears

Many tears were shed during Barack Obama's farewell address on Tuesday night. But perhaps the most touching moment was when his eldest daughter, Malia, choked backed her emotions when her dad said just one name toward the end of his speech: "Michelle."

After declaring the name of his wife, the entire room got to their feet to give the First Lady a standing ovation. FLOTUS remained seated and silently mouthed the words "I love you" to her husband.

Then Obama launched into a beautiful tribute while 18-year-old Malia wiped tears from her face.

"Michelle LaVaughn Robinson, girl of the Southside.

For the past 25 years, you've been not only my wife and mother of my children, but you've been my best friend.

You took on a role you didn't ask for and made it your own with grace and grit and style and good humour."

At this point, everyone was back on their feet, cheering, and Obama had to dab at his eyes and take a moment to compose himself.

"You made the White House a place that belongs to everybody. And a new generation sets its sights higher because it has you as a role model. You've made me proud. You've made the country proud."

Then it was Malia and Sasha's turn.

"Malia and Sasha, under the strangest of circumstances, you have become two amazing young women," Obama continued. "You are smart and you are beautiful but more importantly, you are kind and you are thoughtful and you are full of passion. And you bore the burden of years in the spotlight so easily. Of all that I have done in my life, I am most proud to be your dad."

With her mom's arm around her, Malia remained poised, but it was obvious she took her dad's poignant words to heart.

Unfortunately, Sasha, 15, wasn't able to attend the speech because she had an exam on Wednesday morning to study for.

There is no doubt this family will be missed.

Top Baby Name Predictions For 2017 Are Sweet, But Quirky

Now that 2017 is here, expectant parents are no doubt looking for the hottest names of the year. And thanks to the experts over at Nameberry, we have predictions for the top 100 baby names of 2017.

The baby name site chose monikers they felt were “most emblematic of our times while also being timeless and forward-facing.”

For example, Auden is one of their top picks. The name follows the forever stylish last name as first name trend and means “old friend.” It’s also unisex, making it doubly appealing.

While Nameberry’s list contains classic monikers like Emilia and Clark, their list also has a lot of quirky picks, too. Of these, Calliope, Echo and Loxley are the biggest standouts.

Calliope (pronounced ka-LYE-oh-pee) is described by Nameberry as the “love child of Cadence and Penelope.” While its unique sound reminds us of a feminine flower, it actually comes from Greek mythology. Calliope is the muse of epic poetry and, fittingly, the name means “beautiful voice.”

Similarly, the unisex name Echo comes from mythology as well. It was the name of a legendary nymph. While this word name might sound odd, we love how creative it is. Plus, you can never go wrong with short and sweet.

And finally, Loxley is a rare name that has been “popping on Pinterest,” according to Nameberry. Though it’s uncommon, we can see its appealing factor thanks to the trendy “x” in this name.

Other notable unique names on the list include Keziah (a biblical name), Sayer (instead of Sawyer) and Benno (a twist on Ben).

Visit Nameberry to see their full list of top 100 baby name predictions of 2017.

Cody Scott Leads Rescue Of Horse From Icy Creek Near Rimbey, Alta.

For Cody Scott, it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to save an animal's life — and an ordeal he says he hopes to never face again.

Scott, 20, was out on his snowmobile Monday afternoon looking for a neighbour's Clydesdale horse that had gone missing near the town of Rimbey, Alta.

He eventually found the black beauty submerged up to its neck in the icy waters of Lloyd Creek. The horse had fallen through the ice.

Scott said he made a quick trip home to call the RCMP and fire department, and returned to the horse with a few family members and friends to begin the rescue.

Two hours of pulling

The group worked tirelessly for more than two hours, using ropes and a halter tied around the horse's head and attached to a winch on Scott's Ski-Doo, but the giant Clydesdale was too big to budge.

Finally, Scott said he reached down into the water and managed to tie a rope around one of the horse's hoofs.

"We were able to grab that front foot and put it above the ice, which helped to get her second foot onto the ice," he told Red Deer News.

Firefighters and RCMP showed up soon after to assist in another hour of pulling, which helped haul the horse out.

Scott captured the dramatic rescue on a GoPro camera, and uploaded highlights of the footage to Facebook. (Watch the footage above.)

"Crying in my coffee...bunch of bigass burly angels. Love you for what you did. Hope the horse is ok after being in the cold water so long," Facebook user Jackie Jake commented underneath the dramatic footage.

Scott said he was thankful he was able to save the horse's life, but told Global News he'd "never come across this and hope to never again."
