Slackliner Climbs Chairlift To Save Unconscious Skier's Life

A professional slackliner was in the right place at the right time when he used his climbing skills to save a fellow skier's life.

Mickey Wilson is an adventure athlete from Golden, Colo.

On Wednesday, he was skiing at Arapahoe Basin Ski Area in Colorado's Rocky Mountains when a friend of a friend's backpack got tangled in the chair — knocking him out and leaving him dangling below the chair by his neck.

Watch Mickey Wilson's interview. Article continues below.

“He was already unconscious and had stopped battling to be free. He was hanging lifelessly. And then we start to go up to him and the enormity of the situation hadn’t hit yet, but then one of my friends started yelling, ‘He’s choking; he’s choking; he’s choking!’" Wilson said in an interview with Denver 7 ABC.

Wilson told the Denver Post that he and his friends first tried to make a human pyramid to reach their friend, but when it kept falling he came up with another idea.

“That’s when I realized — it all kind of snapped together — that ‘I can climb this tower and get to him,’” Wilson said.

It took a few minutes for Wilson to reach his unconscious friend, just in time for a ski patrolman to arrive.

The patrolman threw a knife up to Wilson, who cut his friend loose, allowing him to fall into the snow where the patrolman could begin CPR.

CBS Denver reported that the man was treated for broken ribs, and released from the hospital on Thursday.

Watch the incredible rescue above.

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — A cousin of the Ontario woman killed in the New Year's Eve terrorist attack in Turkey says his family feels empty without her.

Ammar Abdul-Raheem spoke outside the memorial service of Alaa Al-Muhandis Sunday, who was one of 39 people killed when a gunman opened fire at an Istanbul nightclub during New Year's Eve celebrations.

Abdul-Raheem said his cousin, a 29-year-old mother of two, always tried to be there for her loved ones.

He said she loved art, fashion, and everything that sparkles.

"Just like anything that sparkles, how it brightens a room up and brings joy to everyone, that's who Alaa was to us.''

Cars filled the parking lots and lined the street outside a Mississauga, Ont., banquet hall as mourners gathered for the service.

Outside of the hall, a picture of Al-Muhandis was surrounded by wreaths, flowers and candles.

The service was closed to media, but a close friend of Al-Muhandis's father, Kemal Degistani, said the hall was packed past its 300-person capacity.

He said the whole Iraqi-Canadian community came together to mourn.

"It's tragedy,'' he said "We're all affected since day one.''

Basim Yousif, who did landscaping at Al-Muhandis's home and her family's businesses, said he felt like he lost a family member.

He remembered Al-Muhandis as a kind woman, who let all the neighbourhood kids play in her backyard.

Nejmettin Vali Bayatli tears up after leaving the memorial for Alaa Al-Muhandis, at the Shahrayar Centre in Mississauga, Ont., on Sunday.

"She left them to play, to make noise, whatever,'' he said.

He said the family's home and businesses are out of the way for him, but he happily made the trip because he loved working with them.

Hasan Rahim had lost touch with Al-Muhandis, but he remembered time they spent together walking home from high school.

"She was hyperactive,'' he said. "She liked to talk. She was a sociable kind of person.''

"Innocent people keep getting killed,'' he added. "I have no words to explain the situation.''

Should The Rich Be Allowed To Finance Their Own Private Jails?

$
0
0
NEW YORK — Dan Zhong's two-story home in Livingston, New Jersey, is unremarkable by suburban standards, but the businessman's lawyers have told a judge he is willing to pay $144,000 per month to turn the place into a private jail where he can comfortably await trial on charges he exploited immigrant Chinese laborers.

His proposal is the latest example of wealthy people facing potentially long prison terms who have asked to finance their own, extravagant house arrests, highlighting inequities between them and defendants of lesser means who languish behind bars and spawning a cottage industry of former federal agents and police officers working as private guards.

Zhong, 47, a former Chinese diplomat and legal U.S. resident, is accused of forcing immigrants to work on construction projects at Chinese diplomatic facilities in the U.S.

For now, he's a prisoner at the fortress-like Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. But he has resources other prisoners don't. His uncle is a Chinese billionaire, Wang Wenliang, who has drawn scrutiny over his large donations to American political campaigns and nonprofits like the Clinton Foundation.

Hiring a security firm to ensure Zhong doesn't flee the property "is a very, very expensive proposition," defense attorney Thomas Fitzpatrick said at a hearing late last year. "His family in China is willing to spend that money to get him out of the MDC."

Prosecutors so far have won the fight to deny Zhong release on $10 million bail, in part by arguing that his finances are too murky. Another hearing is scheduled for Monday.

If a judge approved the scheme, Zhong would join a short but notable list of loaded defendants who turned their New York-area homes into a gilded cage.

Ponzi scheme mastermind Bernard Madoff was released on $10 million bail and allowed to live in his $7 million Manhattan apartment before he was sentenced to a 150-year prison term in 2009.

Former International Monetary Fund leader Dominique Strauss-Kahn posted $5 million bail so he could stay, under guard, in his Manhattan townhouse in 2011 until charges accusing him of sexually assaulting a hotel maid were dropped.

More recently, a judge released Chinese billionaire Ng Lap Seng on $50 million bail so he could live in his $4 million Manhattan apartment, under 24-hour watch by two $200-per-hour security guards, while awaiting trial in a bribery case involving the United Nations.

Other judges have been less hospitable.

Last year, U.S. District Judge Richard Berman denied a $50 million private-jail bail bid by gold trader Reza Zarrab, who is charged with violating U.S. sanctions on Iran. Berman called it "unreasonable because it helps to foster inequity and unequal treatment in favor of a very small cohort of criminal defendants who are extremely wealthy."

Another federal judge in Brooklyn, Nicholas Garaufis, grew disdainful last year when Jacob "Kobi" Alexander, a former technology firm CEO who spent 10 years on the lam in Africa, unsuccessfully sought release on $25 million bail in a securities fraud case.

"Spare me. I wasn't born yesterday," the judge said.

A letter from Guidepost Solutions, a firm headed by former federal prosecutors, lays out the strict conditions for guarding Zhong, including installing alarms, sensors and cameras at his home and instructing his guards to take cellphones from any visitors — and even use "reasonable force" to keep him from fleeing.

But prosecutors in the U.N. bribery case have questioned Guidepost's resolve in their contract to secure Ng. In court papers, they complained the defendant was visited by a masseuse 16 times and was allowed to pick up meals at his favorite restaurant in Chinatown.

"A $10 million bond? They'd probably laugh it off, right?"
— Magistrate Judge Ramon Reyes

Before his arrest, Zhong ran a business affiliated with China Rilin Construction Group, owned by his uncle, Wenliang Wang.

Wang has made large donations to Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe. One of his companies, based in New Jersey, gave $70,000 to the Democrat's gubernatorial campaign and $50,000 to his inaugural committee in 2013, according to campaign finance records.

Rilin also gave at least $1 million to the Clinton Foundation, according to the foundation.

McAuliffe's dealings with Wang touched off a federal probe that the governor's lawyer has said found no wrongdoing. Wang also was among dozens of members of China's legislature expelled last year in a vote-buying scandal.

In a past ruling denying Zhang bail, Magistrate Judge Ramon Reyes suggested that in dealing with the super-rich, even bails in the tens of millions that could be forfeited to the government don't dampen the incentive to flee.

"The relatives in China have a lot of money at their disposal," he said. "A $10 million bond? They'd probably laugh it off, right?"

Wireless 'Bill Shock' A Reality For 1 in 5 Canadians

OTTAWA — A public opinion poll conducted in September for Canada's national telecommunications regulator found that 21 per cent of the respondents had experienced "bill shock'' from their wireless services.

The most recent survey by TNS Canada for the CRTC showed a statistically meaningful decline in complaints about bill shock since a survey done in 2014, when 28 per cent of respondents had experienced the problem.

But the TNS Canada analysis said there was "room for improvement'' since Canadians continue to struggle with tracking how much data and calling minutes they have used. Managing the cost of international roaming fees is another problematic issue.

The survey was done in preparation for a public hearing that the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission will hold from Feb. 6-14 as part of its review of a 2013 code of conduct for wireless service providers.

The poll was based on a telephone survey of 1,483 people aged 18 years and older, conducted from Sept. 6 to 19 — making it accurate within 2.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

Kim Kardashian: 16 Suspects Arrested Over Jewelry Robbery

PARIS — French police arrested 16 people Monday in connection with the October theft of more than $10 million worth of jewelry from Kim Kardashian West.

Paris police officials said the arrests took place starting around 6 a.m. in different locations in the Paris region. The suspects — aged from 23 to 72 — can be held for up to 96 hours before police must either charge them or let them go.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to speak publicly about the continuing investigation.

Jean Veil, the French lawyer for Kardashian West, said the news of arrests is "a great satisfaction."

"These arrests are a nice surprise because we might be able to find the jewels," he told the French magazine L'Express Monday.

Veil said his client could be heard again by investigators and might have to face the suspects.

On Oct. 3, robbers forced their way into the private Paris residence where Kardashian West was staying, tied her up, held her at gunpoint and then locked her in a bathroom before making off with her jewelry. The reality TV star was in Paris attending fashion week shows.

Media reports said police tracked down the suspects through DNA evidence found at the residence. One official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said many were already known for robbery and other crimes.

Earlier this month, the starlet broke her silence on the robbery in a teaser for the family's reality show, telling two of her sisters her thoughts at the time: "They're going to shoot me in the back. There's no way out."

Police said the thieves stole a jewelry box containing valuables worth 6 million euros ($6.7 million) as well as a ring worth 4 million euros ($4.5 million).

Paris police and prosecutor's office previously said five people directly took part in the robbery, including two who forced their way into the apartment.

Police analyzed footage from surveillance cameras to try to identify the assailants, who wore fake police emblems on their jackets.

At the time, a spokeswoman for Kardashian West said she was badly shaken but physically unharmed. The robbery raised new concerns about security in the French capital after a string of deadly extremist attacks.

Kardashian West has the habit of showing her jewels and whereabouts in her social media, including days before the robbery when she posted pictures of herself attending fashion week shows.

Paris has been a special place for Kardashian West and her husband, who spent the weekend there before marrying in Florence in May 2014.

Indian movie star Aamir Khan's latest blockbuster "Dangal" has become the highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time, smashing his own record, trade analysts and producers said on Monday.

The wrestling drama, which is based on the true story of an Indian coach who trained his two daughters to become champion grapplers, has made 3.45 billion rupees ($50.59 million) in just three weeks, according to bollywoodhungama.com.

That is more than the previous top grosser -- Khan's science fiction film "PK", which amassed 3.40 billion rupees during its entire run in 2014.

dangal bollywood

"This is our ninth film with Aamir Khan and with 'Dangal' we've broken our own record of 'PK'," Amrita Pandey, vice-president of studios at Disney India, told AFP via email.

"Dangal", directed by Nitesh Tiwari, is based on the true story of wrestling coach Mahavir Singh Phogat who raised his daughters Geeta and Babita Phogat to become champion wrestlers.

Geeta won a gold medal for India at the 2010 Commonwealth Games while her sister topped the podium at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. "Dangal" is a Hindi word used to describe a wrestling competition.

Khan, 51, gained a lot of weight to play the role of Mahavir before quickly losing 25 kilograms to appear as a younger version of the coach elsewhere in the film.

The movie was released on December 23 and was India's second hit wrestling film of 2016. "Sultan", starring Salman Khan, came out in July, made 3.15 billion rupees and sits third on the all-time grossing list.

When it comes to award shows most of the excitement takes place at the afterparty, but this year it's a high-profile kiss that took place during the 2017 Golden Globes that has everyone talking.

While London, Ont.-born Ryan Gosling was walking to the stage to collect his Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, nominee and fellow Canadian Ryan Reynolds was consoled with a passionate kiss from his tablemate Andrew Garfield.

As the duo grabbed each other by the necks for a quick smooch, Reynolds' wife, Blake Lively, burst into a fit of giggles while cheering them on.

Following the ceremony, ET's Kevin Frazier caught up with Emma Stone, Garfield's former flame and Gosling's co-star in "La La Land," to reflect on her win for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy and her ex's blink-or-you’ll-miss-it kiss.

"What?! They did not kiss each other!" she exclaimed. As Frazier showed her footage of the kiss she responded "They did?! That's hilarious."

Gosling didn't mind sharing the spotlight with his fellow nominee either, telling Frazier: "I mean, I'm happy for them, honestly, you know? Good for them."

Stone and Garfield have remained friendly exes since splitting in 2015. Garfield even gave Stone a standing ovation for her win on Sunday night.

The 2017 Golden Globes gave us a lot of hilarious, touching and fist-bumping moments, but it also unexpectedly made us a bit teary-eyed.

In the middle of the broadcast, the award ceremony paid tribute to the late Carrie Fisher and her mother Debbie Reynolds, both of whom passed away less than 24 hours from each other on Dec. 27 and 28, respectively.

"This past year we lost so many legends and icons," Globes host Jimmy Fallon said, "but a few weeks ago, we lost a mother and a daughter within just a couple of days, and it was a terrible loss that we all felt."

Fallon then introduced a video montage of the stars' most memorable moments in their respective films including Fisher's iconic role as Princess Leia in "Star Wars" and Reynolds as Kathy Selden in "Singin' in the Rain." The montage also showed footage of HBO's new documentary about the mother and daughter, "Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds."

Watch the tribute below:

The doc, which was originally supposed to be released in March, premiered on the specialty network on Saturday, and has received near unanimous rave reviews for its heartwarming portrayal of the mother and daughter.

Fisher was 60 years old when she died after reportedly suffering a heart attack while aboard a flight from London to Los Angeles. Reynolds, 84, passed away after reportedly suffering a stroke while making arrangements for Fisher's funeral.

"She said, 'I want to be with Carrie,'" Reynolds' son, Todd Fisher, said of his mother. "And then she was gone."

Both Fisher and Reynolds were laid to rest on Friday with some of Fisher's ashes buried with her beloved mom.

Actress Viola Davis presented her esteemed Hollywood colleague Meryl Streep with the Cecil B. DeMille award at Sunday night's Golden Globes, and gave us a speech many of us could relate to.

While recounting her history with the Academy Award-winning actress, the "How To Get Away With Murder" star noted that Streep's talent, both on and off screen, has made women from all walks of life, herself included, feel like they were "less alone" and "enough."

"Her artistry reminds us of the impact of what it means to be an artist, which is to make us feel less alone," Davis exclaimed.

The 51-year-old later concluded, "You make me proud to be an artist. You make me feel that what I have in me — my body, my face, my age — is enough. You encapsulate that great Emile Zola quote that if you ask me as an artist what I came into this world to do, I as an artist would say, I came to live out loud."

Chris Hemsworth’s kids proved they’re his biggest fans when they cheered him on at the 2017 Golden Globes from home.

The “Thor” star attended the award show with his wife, Elsa Pataky, and presented the award for Best Motion Picture, Foreign Language. When Hemsworth took to the stage with fellow presenter Gal Gadot, his children – four-year-old India and two-year-old twins Sasha and Tristan – were adorably attached to the screen.

The heartwarming moment was captured by Pataky’s half-brother Cristian Prieto, who was looking after his niece and nephews.

After the photo was shared on Instagram, many fans couldn’t get over the fact that the kids had placed a Thor doll beside them as they watched their dad on screen.

“Omg… I'm dying! The little Thor doll too!” one user wrote.

“I love that next to your kids is a Thor doll,” another added. “They must treasure having a super hero daddy bless them.”

This isn’t the first time the Hemsworth kids have supported their papa. In 2015, Pataky shared another adorable snap of the family watching the 33-year-old actor on “Saturday Night Live.”

And India has also visited her dad on the set of “The Huntsman.”

Andrew Scheer: Ethics Watchdog Should Probe Trudeau's Vacation On The Aga Khan's Island

A Conservative leadership hopeful has asked the ethics watchdog to investigate Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s vacation to the private Bahamian island of a religious leader — whose non-profit organization has received millions of Canadian tax dollars.

In a letter to Ethics Commissioner Mary Dawson Sunday, Andrew Scheer called on her to probe if Trudeau violated the Conflict of Interest Act by accepting the “private gift” from the Aga Khan, hereditary leader of the world’s 15 million Ismali Muslims.

The Aga Khan, a philanthropist and long-time friend of the prime minister, hosted Trudeau’s family on his private Bell Island over the holiday season.

Section 14.1 of the Conflict of Interest Act states:

Neither a Member nor any member of a Member's family shall accept, directly or indirectly, any gift or other benefit, except compensation authorized by law, that might reasonably be seen to have been given to influence the Member in the exercise of a duty or function of his or her office.

The Ottawa-based Aga Khan Foundation, which supports development projects in Africa and Asia, has received tens of millions of dollars from the federal government. It is a registered lobbyist.

Scheer’s letter notes the government also provided $30 million for the group’s headquarters in Ottawa.

On his campaign website, Scheer asked supporters to sign a petition if they agreed Trudeau should face questions over accepting a “free vacation on a private island from someone whose foundation gets millions from the government.”

'This is just mind-numbing': Raitt

Scheer is not the only Tory leadership contender to raise red flags.

When the details of Trudeau’s visit broke Friday in a National Post story, Lisa Raitt called the news “mind-numbing.”

“There are clear rules on lobbying and ethics. Is the PM so arrogant that he thinks he is ‘above’ them?” Raitt asked on Twitter.

Kellie Leitch also called for an ethics investigation, charging that Trudeau “clearly tried to hide his whereabouts.”

The Prime Minister’s Office says Trudeau will reimburse taxpayers the cost of the airfare for himself and his family to and from Nassau. For security reasons, Trudeau is not allowed to fly commercial and must use the government’s Challenger jet.

Khan was bestowed honorary Canadian citizenship in 2009 by then-prime minister Stephen Harper. He also addressed Parliament in 2014, calling Canada “a leader in the community of nations.”

A man in Illinois has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for stealing a TV remote.

Eric Bramwell, 35, was sentenced on Wednesday for taking the remote from an apartment complex’s common area back in 2015, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney’s Office.

This wasn’t his first burglary. Prosecutors said that starting in 2014, Bramwell had stolen items, including televisions, from several other area apartment complexes.

He was eligible for up to 30 years in prison because of his past offences.

"Mr. Bramwell’s illegal activity and his history have finally caught up with him," Attorney Robert B. Berlin said in a press release.

"Regardless of what was stolen, Mr. Bramwell repeatedly thumbed his nose at the law. He took what he wanted time and time again and expected to avoid the consequences," he said.

"That’s not how it works, as Mr. Bramwell has now found out."

What should have been a joyous moment for Tom Hiddleston has turned sour.

During his acceptance speech for winning Best Actor in a Mini-Series or TV Motion Picture for his role in "The Night Manager," Hiddleston recalled a trip he took to South Sudan with UNICEF. While attempting to bring attention to the civil war-ravaged nation he revealed he spoke with doctors and nurses with Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) who told him they binge-watch his series.

"The idea that I could, or that we could provide, some relief and entertainment for people who work for Unicef and Médecins Sans Frontières and The World Food Programme who are fixing the world in the places where it was broken made me immensely proud," he said.

Twitter users who were watching, however, felt Hiddleston's speech was nothing more than self-indulgent.

Despite the online debate, Hiddleston isn't letting Twitter ruin his first-ever Golden Globe win. Following the award show the actor told TMZ he wasn't aware about the comments made online but that "we all have to do the best we can to help each other out.”

Aaliyah And Shanna Desmond, Mother And Daughter Killed In Murder-Suicide, Remembered

The obituaries for Shanna Desmond and Aaliyah Desmond describe the mother and daughter as kind and loving people who shared the same big smile.

Aaliyah, 10, and Shanna, 31, were found shot dead in a murder-suicide in Nova Scotia last week. It is believed Aaliyah's father, Lionel Desmond, killed his daughter and wife, as well as his mother, Brenda Desmond, before turning the gun on himself.

All four were found last Tuesday evening in a home in Upper Big Tracadie, N.S.

Aaliyah's obituary describes the young girl as an animal lover who dreamed of one day becoming a veterinarian.

"Aaliyah had the most beautiful smile and would light up any room as soon as she entered it."

Shanna, a recent nursing graduate, had a passion for travel and music and her obituary says she was a "completely loving, caring and honest person."

According to CBC News, Lionel was released from the military in 2015 and had traveled to Montreal last year to receive treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) — something family and friends said he had struggled with since returning from a tour in Afghanistan in 2007.

Lionel's obituary said the 33-year-old "succumbed to the tortures of PTSD," but was "known for his friendly demeanour and contagious smile."

"His can-do attitude was evident while serving his unit and community."

His mother's obituary described Brenda, 52, as an "avid bingo player" who was well known for her smile and laughter.

Over the weekend, the federal government confirmed it will pay for the funerals of all four people.

Funeral services for Lionel and his mother will be held Wednesday, while a service for his wife and daughter will happen Thursday.

Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil said last Thursday that an investigation had be launched into how the province treated Lionel, and whether he received the appropriate care.

He said while it's clear Lionel had received some treatment for his PTSD, it's unclear if the province provided any of those services.

In the past, the “Lobster” star revealed that he’s very protective of her, especially when it comes to dating. After his parents divorced in 2012, Rita began seeing film producer Joel B Michaels. The two married in 2013 in Farrell’s backyard.

“It’s going strong,” he said on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” in 2015. “It was a fast track. Six months after they met, they were on the alter making the most beautiful declarations of love, which is really, really cool.”

Here's What The Duchess Of Cambridge's Diet Usually Looks Like

Sticking true to her "she's just like us" mantra, turns out the Duchess of Cambridge has a diverse palette when it comes to food.

The 35-year-old Duchess (a.k.a Kate Middleton), who celebrates her birthday on Monday, Jan. 9, enjoys eating everything from raw foods to making family recipes at home, according to Delish.

According to former Kensington Palace chef Carolyn Robb in an interview with Racked in 2015, Catherine loves to cook for her family.

"You have to remember that she’s not royal. She comes from a normal background and a normal home where she’s always cooked for herself. And what I’ve always heard is that William enjoys spending time with her family because they just eat together at the kitchen table like a normal family. I’m sure that that’s what they still do," she told the site.

When she was pregnant with Prince George, Hello! magazine reported the Duchess' cravings included spicy vegetarian curry made by her family friends in her hometown in Berkshire.

Delish says when it comes to eating healthy, the mom-of-two also eats everything from watermelon salads to gazpacho to tabbouleh.

And when she isn't cooking and eating at home, Hello! also reports Kate loves the restaurant Bumpkin in London.

In fact in 2012, the Duke and Duchess took their 27-member staff to Bumpkin's Notting Hill location for a Christmas lunch.

And because both the Duke and Duchess are always on the go, they also get to indulge in local favourites while on tour.

While they were in B.C. in September 2016, the couple got to sample a giant "phallic" clam a.k.a. geoduck.

Canadian Beavers Are Destroying Patagonian Forests In Chile And Argentina

Canadian beavers are wreaking havoc in an unexpected location: a swath of forest in South America.

Some 200,000 dam-building creatures are creating harmful floods that threaten Patagonian forests and nearby lakes that cover parts of Chile and Argentina.

In 1946, 25 pairs of beavers were brought to the Chilean and Argentinian archipelago of Tierra del Fuego, in an attempt to bring the fur industry to the area.

But since beavers have no natural predators— like wolves, lynx, or coyotes— in the area, the population swelled over the last 70 years. Their dams have caused damage to thousands of old-growth trees and peat bogs.

A 2015 documentary about the beavers' introduction to the area referred to the wood-chomping critters as "invaders of the end of the world."

The damaged area is about double the size of the city of Buenos Aires, according to BBC News.

In November, the Chilean and Argentinian governments began a 10-year mission to exterminate 100,000 beavers with traps, training hunters to eventually eradicate the species.

And this month, the Chilean government will begin a $7.8-million population control project, which also involves placing traps, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Authorities have offered rewards for trapping and killing beavers in the past, but few people in the area actually know how to do that, according to NPR.

A nearby tourist town also tried serving beaver meat as a delicacy, but that didn't work out too well either.

Animal rights activists have criticized plans to cull the animals, suggesting they should be sent back to Canada.

But Chilean biologists consider that move to be both expensive and impractical, according to the L.A. Times.

Chilean biologist Giorgia Graells told the Times that Patagonian ecosystems are not prepared for the kinds of changes that beavers bring.

"When an area is flooded, the seeds get covered by mud and water and die, and the forest won't recover,” she said.

Cat And Dog Abandoned In Calgary Storage Unit

A pet cat and dog are recovering after they were rescued from a freezing-cold Calgary storage unit, discovered in kennels buried under piles of boxes last Friday.

A detective told Global News that black tape had been used around the cat's head to tape its mouth shut.

Police said they were called to the storage facility unit in the city's southeast after staff said they could hear sounds coming from the unit.

"It was very clear to them, it was the sounds of a dog and a cat," Det. Andy Nguyen told CBC News.

Nguyen said police cut the lock and had to dig past boxes and other items before finding the animals, who were both in travel cages.

The animals were taken to the Calgary Humane Society, who confirmed to the Calgary Sun that both pets are now "in stable condition."

Nguyen confirmed to the Calgary Sun that the person renting the storage unit has an outstanding animal bylaw warrant on an unrelated matter. He said investigators are determining whether charges will be laid.

"It was very clear to them, it was the sounds of a dog and a cat."

This case is reminiscent of the 2014 deaths of a cat and dog that were found emaciated and with their mouths taped shut a few days apart in the same alley in southeast Calgary.

A man in that case was charged, however, police have not confirmed any connections between last week's finding and any previous reports of animal abuse in Calgary.

A downturn in the Alberta economy, largely driven by a drop in the price of oil, has meant an uptick in the surrender of animals, as people are forced to part with their pets.

"It's the last thing they want to do. Typically they will go without a lot of things ... without food ... maybe they'll skip rent for a month if they have to," Sage Pullen McIntosh, spokeswoman with the Calgary Humane Society, said in an interview last September.

She also said some people are letting their animals go as strays, because the "they feel embarrassed ... they feel ashamed," about not being able to provide for their furry friends.

Jared Kushner, Trump's Son-In-Law, To Be Named Senior White House Adviser

NEW YORK — President-elect Donald Trump's influential son-in-law, Jared Kushner, will join the White House as a senior adviser, according to two people briefed on the decision. He's taking a broad role that could give him sway over both domestic and foreign policy.

Kushner, who is married to Trump's daughter Ivanka, is taking the West Wing job despite an anti-nepotism law that bars officials from appointing relatives to government positions. Some aides to Trump have argued that the law does not apply to the White House.

Kushner's lawyer has said he would step down as CEO of his family's real estate business if he took a White House position and would divest some of his assets in order to comply with federal ethics laws that apply to government employees. The law requires Kushner to take more significant steps to detangle his business interests than Trump, given that conflict of interest laws largely do not apply to the president.

"Mr. Kushner is committed to complying with federal ethics laws and we have been consulting with the Office of Government Ethics regarding the steps he would take," Jamie Gorelick, a partner at the law firm of WilmerHale, said in a statement Saturday, before Kushner's role was finalized.

The two people briefed on Kushner's White House job insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose the matter before an official announcement. An announcement is expected later this week.

A fixture on campaign team

Kushner, 35, emerged as one of Trump's most powerful campaign advisers during his father-in-law's often unorthodox presidential bid. He was deeply involved in the campaign's digital efforts and was usually at Trump's side during the election's closing weeks.

Since then, Kushner has continued to play a central role in the transition, taking part in Cabinet interviews and often getting a last word alone with Trump after a meeting concludes. Trump has invited him to listen to phone calls on another line, his presence sometimes not announced to the caller. And Trump has been known to call him late at night to review the day.

Like his father-in-law, Kushner pushed a mid-sized real estate company into the high-stakes battlefield of Manhattan. Though he is often viewed as more moderate than Trump, people close to him say he fully bought in to the Trump campaign's fiery populist message that resonated with white working class voters. He never publicly distanced himself from Trump's more provocative stances, including the candidate's call for a Muslim-immigration ban and his doubts about President Barack Obama's birthplace.

Prior to the campaign, Kushner and Ivanka Trump were not overtly political. Kushner's father was a Democratic fundraiser while Ivanka, whose personal brand has a focus on young working mothers, counted Chelsea Clinton among her friends.
