Alberta Fire Ban Lifted, But Wildfires Still Burn

Alberta government officials have lifted a provincewide fire ban due to improved conditions and the efforts of firefighters.

As of Sunday, only five wildfires were burning out of control across the province, while 31 others had been contained, reports the Edmonton Journal.

Wildfire Information spokesman Richard Horne told Global News that two fires Lac La Biche area, one in the Cold Lake Weapons Range area, and one in the Conklin area are considered to be out of control.

Officials caution that many fire bans and restrictions still exist in areas of the province and the wildfire outlook continues to be severe.

Since April 1, officials report 748 fires and about 430 square kilometres have burned.

Approximately 1,700 firefighters, 159 helicopters and 28 airtankers have been positioned across Alberta fighting wildfires.

BuzzBuzzHome: Petition Calls For Crackdown On Foreign Investment In GTA Real Estate

BuzzBuzzHome: A call to restrict foreign investment in GTA real estate has gained popularity on internet petition site change.org. As of publication, 10,005 supporters have signed the petition which asks Brad Duguid, the Minister of Economic Development, Employment and Infrastructure, to consider enacting new regulations limiting who can buy existing GTA homes.

The petition was posted to the site three weeks ago by Shaan Brach of Richmond Hill, though it picked up considerable steam Monday, with 1,000 new signatures added in the span of 10 hours.

The authors say the petition is “meant to protect current Canadian citizens, including recent immigrants, from the overwhelming amount of foreign investment taking over the GTA’s residential real estate market. This wealthy foreign investment strategy is driving up prices, and lowering our standard of living as a result, as it is making it impossible for Canadians to buy homes in their own country.”

The petition points to a Toronto Star article that estimates 50 per cent of condo real estate in Vancouver and Toronto is foreign-owned and 15 per cent of Toronto condos are unoccupied, “meaning they are solely for investing.”

However, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) released a rental market survey in December 2014 that suggested foreign investment makes up 2.4 per cent of the Toronto condo market and 2.3 per cent of the Vancouver market. Currently, there is no data available tracking the rate of foreign ownership of real estate in Canada, so estimates vary.

The letter to the minister asks him to consider new rules similar to those established in Australia in 2010, that bar foreigners from buying existing residences in the country. However, they are allowed to buy new construction homes, “meaning the country’s real estate market grows, while pricing stays the same because more real estate will become available.”

Veterans' Lawsuit Against Harper Government On Hold Until After Election

VANCOUVER - A long-running lawsuit launched by veterans against the federal government is off the docket until after the federal election, if not for good.

The two sides appeared in a Vancouver court today to agree to pause the case, in which veterans are arguing that modern-day soldiers are discriminated against compared to those who fought in earlier wars.

In defending the lawsuit, government lawyers outraged veterans by asserting that the federal government has no extraordinary obligation to those who have fought for the country.

Since then, a raft of new measures to improve benefits for veterans have been unveiled by the Conservatives, including a bill that recognizes the so-called "sacred obligation" in its preamble.

A lawyer for the veterans says with new legislation and regulations already on the table, as well as an upcoming election, they are willing to give the government until May 2016 to see if the situation improves.

In exchange, the Conservative government agreed to walk away from its appeal of the decision that allowed the class-action lawsuit to go ahead, but a judge instead simply ordered the case be put on hold.

Pentagon Says Live Anthrax May Have Been Sent To Canadian Labs

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Defence says it has determined that possibly live anthrax was mistakenly sent to labs in Canada and Washington state, in addition to the numerous labs in the United States and abroad that were announced last week.

A Pentagon spokesman, Col. Steve Warren, says Canadian and Washington state authorities have been notified.

Warren said the suspect anthrax was from a sample at Dugway Proving Ground in Utah.

The anthrax was supposed to have been inactivated before being sent to labs across the U.S. for research but apparently was not. It also was sent to labs in South Korea and Australia.

The Pentagon and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are investigating.

Warren said there is no known risk to public health.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter To Resign Amid Corruption Scandal

ZURICH (AP) — FIFA President Sepp Blatter will resign from soccer's governing body amid a widening corruption scandal and has promised to call for fresh elections to choose a successor.

The 79-year-old Blatter was re-elected to a fifth term on Friday, two days after a corruption crisis erupted and seven soccer officials were arrested in Zurich ahead of the FIFA congress.

"This mandate does not seem to be supported by everybody in the world of football,'' Blatter said Tuesday at a hastily arranged news conference. "FIFA needs a profound restructuring.''

Elections are expected to take place sometime between December and March.

"I will continue to exercise my function (until the new election),'' said Blatter, who looked strained and serious.

Three days earlier, Blatter was defiant and feisty in the same room when fending off questions about FIFA's battered reputation and the chance U.S. federal agencies could seek his arrest.

Blatter said he reached the decision after he had "thoroughly considered my presidency and ... the last 40 years in my life.''

Blatter joined FIFA in 1975 as technical director for development projects, was promoted to general secretary in 1981 and spent 17 years as right-hand man to Joao Havelange of Brazil before being elected to lead world soccer.

The new election will be overseen by Domenico Scala, chairman of FIFA's audit and compliance committee.

Scala gave a statement immediately after Blatter in which he praised a decision that was "difficult and courageous in the current circumstances.''

"This is the most responsible way to ensure an orderly transition,'' Scala said.

This Floating Solar Farm May One Day Grow 8,000 Tons Of Veggies Every Year

One architecture firm has an innovative idea to stave off a possible food security crisis — grow fresh vegetables at sea.

Designers at Barcelona-based Forward Thinking Architecture put together an eye-catching proposal for a solar-powered floating farm to grow food and raise fish near some of the world’s biggest cities.

The concept leans on vertical farming technology, a new-age agricultural method of growing food in soil-less greenhouses. They're stacked high with planter beds filled with nutrient-enriched water.

The idea has transformed warehouses and parking garages around the world into urban food-producing powerhouses, making it a promising field in agribusiness.

Founding architect Javier Ponce at Forward Thinking told The Huffington Post Canada that a floating solar farm offers an alternative avenue to feed coastal cities in a sustainable way.

“I believe it is important since it opens new possibilities and makes people rethink how things have been done until now,” he said in an email.

The things Ponce refers to are predictable challenges associated with traditional farming, namely a heavy reliance on fossil fuels to transport produce around the world.

A floating farm anchored near major urban centres could make some foods more readily available to those areas — curbing the need for some long-distance imports.

Designers estimate the solar-powered farm could grow upwards of 8,152 tons of vegetables and 1,703 tons of fish annually in a facility 200 x 350 metres wide.

“I believe as humanity we should be already exploring different potential ways towards self-sufficiency, including close-by local food production in order to improve our future,” Ponce explained.

The first level would be fish-farm focused, equipped with a desalination plant, water access points, wave barriers and protection. A project description also notes on-site processing and packaging areas.

Powered by rooftop solar panels, the second level is designed to be an automated pesticide-free hydroponic greenhouse to grow leafy greens and other vegetables.

“The aim of the [smart floating farm] is not to replace traditional farming, not at all,” reads a project description. “But to serve as a flexible farming alternative thinking about the present and the future of food imports and countries with different agricultural challenges.”

“This means no crop failure due to droughts, floods, pests, or other periodic natural phenomena, as well as elimination of agricultural runoff,” architects explained.

The floating farm’s mobility is another competitive advantage over traditional land-based farming. It can theoretically move close to different areas with water access. Designers pointed to New York, Seattle, Mumbai, Los Angeles, and Montreal as examples.

According to the United Nations, the Earth’s population is expected to swell to 8.3 billion by 2030 and 9.1 billion by 2050. With that, comes an obvious challenge: food demand is predicted to increase by 70 per cent over the next 35 years.

“The main challenge facing the agricultural sector is not so much growing 70 per cent more food… but making 70 per cent more food available on the plate,” cites an UN brief on water and food security.

Over 70 per cent of the food Canadians buy is homegrown. But there’s a food-security crisis on the horizon: the slim portion of the country’s crop-friendly land is being sold off by retiring farmers to buyers with dreams of development.

In Southern Ontario, a population boom has continued to transform the landscape, gobbling land — which just happens to be some of the country’s most arable — and covering it over to host new developments. Between 2000 and 2011 alone, settlement on fertile land increased by 19 per cent.

So as the world’s farmland becomes increasingly settled on, designers suggest the mobile floating farm could help offset the change, becoming ”a game changer in terms of bringing food closer to where it’s needed.”

An Edmonton man is dead after drowning in a creek along a popular hiking trail in Banff National Park.

Police say the 28-year-old man was hiking with friends at Johnston Canyon Sunday, and drowned in Johnston Creek.

A Parks Canada Search and Rescue team was called at approximately 4:45 p.m. on Sunday and RCMP were notified shortly after of a man unconcious in the water.

The body was recovered around 6 p.m.

Cpl. Chris Kosack of Banff RCMP told the Calgary Sun it's believed the man was looking for a way to cool off and jumped into the creek near one of the trail's lower waterfalls.

"He started to struggle, and was pulled under," Kosack said.

Cpl. Sharon Franks reminds hikers to be "mindful this time of year around water."

She told Global News the spring runoff is "increasing the amounts of water and the water is very cold."

RCMP say the incident is not suspicious, but they are investigating the man's death.

Despite all the incredible fashion seen at the 2015 CFDA Fashion Awards, we were a little bit disappointed that nothing made a statement like Rihanna's see-through dress from last year.

That is, until we saw this man.

di mondo

Meet Di Mondo, the man who wore sheer pants to the prestigious awards. Dubbed the "Patrick McDonald of the Instagram age," by the New York Times, Di Mondo (whose real name is Edmundo Huerta) has earned the attention of celebs like Kendall Jenner and countless New Yorkers for his daring and eclectic style choices.

And these sheer pants are no exception. As Racked puts it, Di Mondo solved the "serious sartorial quandry of summer" by choosing the perfect warm weather bottoms for men (that is, if you're totally opposed to shorts and believe they are for little boys, but we'll leave that for another post...)

So, sheer pants for men -- yay or nay? Let us know in the comments below!

Twitter 'Hashflags' To Support Canada's Women's World Cup Team

Twitter is making it possible for Canadian soccer fans to show their national pride, even if they can't make it to the Women's World Cup in person.

The social network has rolled out "hashflags," or hashtags that display a country's flag when you tweet them.

It's the first time Canadian hashflags are being used, after Twitter rolled them out for other countries at the 2010 and 2014 men's World Cups (Canada did not qualify for either of the events).

Canadian musician Sarah McLachlan was first to tweet her country's hashflag on Monday, and now she wants everyone else to do the same.

This time out, all the countries' flags are outlined by a maple leaf, recognizing the fact that the 2015 Women's World Cup is taking place in Canada.

Canada's own hashflag has already caught on with numerous Twitter users, though some noted confusion given the shape of the flags (note: the hashflags themselves do not show up in embedded tweets):

Canada's Support For Israel 'Unwavering,' Rob Nicholson Says

JERUSALEM - Foreign Affairs Minister Rob Nicholson is in Israel on a visit to show what he calls Canada's "unwavering support" for the Jewish state.

Nicholson's visit comes at a time when Israel faces increasing international criticism over its policies and the deadlock in peace talks with the Palestinians.

Last week, Israel fended off a Palestinian attempt to expel it from FIFA.

On Tuesday, President Barack Obama told an Israeli TV station that the world is skeptical about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's commitment to peace.

Nicholson told Netanyahu on Wednesday that "we understand that Israel's neighbourhood is as dangerous as Canada's is peaceful."

Canada and Israel are close allies.

Nicholson, who took on the foreign affairs portfolio in February, is meeting with both Israeli and Palestinian officials during his three-day visit.

Edmonton Bus Driver Gets Apology From School Board After Kicking Student Off

An Edmonton bus driver who was caught on camera kicking a student off his bus has been vindicated after additional footage that shows him being assaulted by a student was released this week.

The Edmonton Catholic School District has apologized for demanding that the driver be fired after he forced the unruly Grade 7 student off his bus 10 blocks early last Monday.

"In light of the second video showing an assault on the driver, we realize we should not have requested the driver’s termination and have apologized to his employer, Cunningham Transportation Services, and will be apologizing to the driver as soon as we can reach him," said a post to the district's Facebook page on Tuesday.

On Monday, the bus company issued a statement defending the employee, after video taken by a student was aired on Global News over the weekend.

The video was shot from the back of the bus and only shows the driver ejecting the student.

"Get off my bus" the driver yells before closing the door.

"I'm pretty sure that's child abuse," shouts one child, as another starts sobbing.

Video From Global Edmonton

Laura Doroshenko with Cunningham Transport Ltd. said the student ejected from the bus punched a child sitting across the aisle. He then threatened the bus driver with violence.

Another 13-year-old boy also slammed his hockey bag into the driver's head when he stepped off the bus a moment earlier, she said. The driver's glasses were knocked sideways on his face.

The driver tried to radio the company's office to report he was having trouble but couldn't reach anyone, said Doroshenko.

So he kicked the student off.

Doroshenko told the Calgary Sun the company has been "inundated" with messages of support for the driver, and while he won't lose his job, he has been assigned to a different route.

According to CTV News, the two boys were suspended from riding the bus for one week.

(Paris-AFP) - "Pirates of the Caribbean" star Johnny Depp is about to chart a new course into fragrant waters by agreeing to be the face promoting Dior's line of men's scents.

The French luxury fashion house confirmed to AFP on Wednesday that the 51-year-old American actor would soon be fronting its new cologne.

johnny depp dior

Dior declined to say how much the contract was worth, but it has pockets deep enough to afford him while also paying Natalie Portman and Charlize Theron to endorse its products.

Depp, ranked among the top-paid actors in Hollywood, has amassed an estimated fortune of $250 million (220 million euros), much of it thanks to the "Pirates" movie franchise, the latest of which he is currently filming in Australia.

His star has been fading of late, though, with a string of box office bombs over the past four years, including "The Lone Ranger", "Transcendence" and "Mortdecai".

He ran into trouble last month in Australia after smuggling his two pet terriers into the country on his private jet, bypassing strict quarantine laws. After authorities threatened to put the dogs down, prompting him to have them flown back out, Australian media termed the incident the "war on terrier".

Your Toothbrush May Be Covered In Someone Else's Bacteria

$

Toothbrushes in communal bathrooms could be playing a game of catch with the bacteria fecal coliforms, spreading it far and wide in a short time, according to a new study.

If the name "fecal coliforms" gives you the willies, the bacteria originates in the intestines, just as the name suggests.

"The main concern is not with the presence of your own fecal matter on your toothbrush, but rather when a toothbrush is contaminated with fecal matter from someone else, which contains bacteria, viruses or parasites that are not part of your normal flora," says Lauren Aber, a graduate student at Quinnipiac University in the US.

In the study, the research team collected toothbrushes from various communal bathrooms at QU that were shared between 9.4 individuals, on average.

Although bathroom users practiced a range of storage methods with their toothbrushes, the research team found that 60 per cent were contaminated with fecal coliforms.

This number is consistent with previous research done on toothbrushes and fecal coliforms, yet in the situation of a communal bathroom, the chances that the fecal coliforms came from someone else is 80 percent, according to the study.

As far as hygiene was concerned, the researchers observed no differences between decontamination using cold versus hot water or rinsing with mouthwash.

In fact, the only two toothbrushes in the study that owners claimed they regularly rinsed with mouthwash showed telltale signs of fecal contamination.

"Using a toothbrush cover doesn't protect a toothbrush from bacterial growth, but actually creates an environment where bacteria are better suited to grow by keeping the bristles moist and not allowing the head of the toothbrush to dry out between uses," says Aber.

Communal or not, the bathroom is an environment that makes toothbrushes vulnerable to contamination with substances from the toilet, according to the study that was presented at the annual meeting of the American Society for Microbiology.

What's more, hollow-headed power toothbrushes could attract and transmit even more bacteria than solid ones, according to another recent study conducted at Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Dentistry.

"Toothbrushes can transmit microorganisms that cause disease and infections. A solid-head design allows for less growth of bacteria and bristles should be soft and made of nylon," says lead author Donna Warren Morris, R.D.H., M.Ed.

Finding a solid-head power toothbrush can be a daunting process because as Morris points out, the packaging does not normally indicate that aspect of the head design.

The study was published in the Journal of Dental Hygiene.

Shia LaBeouf's 'Just Do It' Motivational Video Is Good. But These Parodies Are Better.

Shia LaBeouf used to be the face for the Transformers franchise. Then he became the guy who hid that face behind paper bags. Then he was accused of plagiarism. Then he got arrested. Then he went quiet.

So, what's the actor been up to as of late? This:

No, LaBeouf hasn't been tapped by Nike to shout its motivational slogan at you (though he takes to the task with much gusto). What you're watching is a directed and scripted performance for an arts project with Central Saint Martins, an arts college in London, according to Yahoo Tech.

Artists Luke Turner and Nastja Säde Rönkkö filmed LaBeouf in front of a green screen as a means of introducing several pieces of art from the school, reports the Guardian. They then uploaded the footage to Vimeo and YouTube.

And that's when the Internet decided to take some artistic licenses by superimposing a shouting LaBeouf into footage from "Star Wars", "The Avengers" and even giving him his own TED Talk (sorta), Global News points out.

Curious as to what other parodies are out there? Just watch the video above. Well, what are you waiting for? JUST DO IT!
