Poverty, unemployment remain persistent challenges for Canada's disabled: report

OTTAWA - Some facts about Canada's disabled citizens, according to a new report on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities:

Number of disabled Canadians: In 2006, the most recent year available, the disability rate in Canada was 14.3 per cent, meaning nearly 4.4 million Canadians — or one in seven — have a physical or mental disability.

Mental disabilities: Approximately 900,000 people aged 15 or older report disabilities of an emotional, psychological or psychiatric nature.

Most common types of disabilities: Pain-related, mobility and agility disabilities.

Ongoing challenges: Poverty rates, finding employment.
