Her son may already have an Olympic gold medal, but that doesn't make it any easier for Alma Moir to watch him skate in competitions.
"Every time I’m on TV, I’m crying," she told CBC News on Sunday while explaining the stress that comes with seeing her son, Scott Moir, compete.
Moir and skating partner Tessa Virtue won the gold medal in ice dance at the Vancouver Games in 2010.
This time around, Moir and Virtue will be seeking to defend their medal — though they also competed in the Games' historic first team figure skating event in Sochi on Sunday. The Canadian team won a silver medal.
Moir’s mother was watching the team event from a sports bar in London, Ont., along with her sister.
"I always wait for their reaction at the end to see if they’re happy with it and then I can breathe," Alma Moir said.
The sports bar, which is owned by Scott Moir’s uncle, features pictures and mementoes from the skating career of Virtue and his nephew.
Before Virtue and Moir take the ice again in Sochi, their families will be heading to Russia to see them compete in their remaining ice dance events.
"It’s going to be gold. We're going there and we're going to celebrate, and they're saving their best for the end," Alma Moir said.
Sochi could be the pair’s last appearance at an Olympics. It's expected Virtue and Moir will retire after they return from Russia.
