Police in Barrie, Ont., say a speeding vehicle slammed into a snowbank, went airborne, landed upside down and started spinning, all before the driver opened his door and ran away from the scene.

The incident unfolded late Saturday night near the intersection of Anne Street and Tiffin Street.

Police were called to the scene at about 10:30 p.m., arriving minutes after the crash had occurred.

They caught up with the driver, who was then given breath tests — according to police, he had a blood-alcohol level that was 2½ times the legal limit.

A 44-year-old man has been charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and with having a blood-alcohol level over 80 milligrams.
