Vanity licence plates coming to Quebec

As of September 2015, Quebecers will be able to pay to have vanity licence plates.

Car owners who are willing to pay will be able to order a licence plate with up to seven custom characters.

Transport Minister Sylvain Gaudreault says it's an idea whose time has come.

“As minister, there are so many people who stop me in the street — no joke — to tell me, ‘When will we be able to have personalized plates like they do in Vermont, New York or Ontario?’ So I’m responding to that,” said Gaudreault.

“This is something we are able to do — at zero cost. The Treasury Board will be happy.”

Still no price set

Every licence plate must be unique and can contain a maximum of seven characters but special symbols will not be allowed.

Gaudreault says a special committee will be created to come up with standards to decide what words may be forbidden.

“Words like ‘Nazi’ or ‘FLQ’ are really not appropriate,” he said.

The cost is yet to be determined, but in other provinces personalized plates cost anywhere from $80 to $350 on top of regular registration fees.

Gaudreault says the initiative should make the province a little extra money.

Elsewhere in Canada, two per cent of drivers opt for vanity plates.
