Queen of Angels Academy, a semi-private secondary school for girls in Dorval, is closing at the end of the school year.
It was confirmed in a letter obtained by CBC News. Board Chairperson Dominic Vavaro wrote in the letter to parents:
Faced with challenging demographics, declining enrolment, rising costs and a growing deficit, the Board of Directors has made the difficult decision to close Queen of Angels Academy at the end of this school year.
Vavaro noted that enrolment has declined substantially since the 2006-07 academic year, when it counted 515 students.
Just 186 students are currently enrolled at the school. The school doubled its fees over the past seven years to cope, and it would have to double them again to make ends meet — something Vavaro called "unrealistic."
"We are forecasting a further decline for next year if we were to stay open. In fact, the number of graduating students has exceeded the number of incoming students for some time," Vavaro wrote.
The school was founded in 1888 by the Congregation of the Sisters of Sainte-Anne.
