The B.C. Coroners Service had identified the man shot and killed by an RCMP officer Friday night as 61-year-old Gaetan Gilbert Plante of Surrey.
Plante was shot shortly before 10 p.m. PT after Surrey RCMP went to a home in the 11700 block of 98A Avenue in North Surrey.
The Independent Investigations Office (IIO), which has taken over the investigation into the shooting, said police had been asked "to check the welfare of a male."
Officers found Plante in the home and at some point during the police's interaction with him, an officer shot him.
Plante was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster, where he was pronounced dead.
Owen Court, a spokesman for the IIO, says his organization was contacted by Surrey RCMP at approximately 10:15 p.m.
The IIO conducts investigations where it appears that a person may have died or suffered serious harm as a result of actions of a police officer in B.C.
