It's no surprise that Olivia and Liam have topped the baby name chart in Alberta for the second year in a row — both are popular names that ride high on many a list lately.
But when the province released their annual baby names list Thursday morning, detailing the monikers of the 27,147 girls and 28,440 boys born in the province last year, we immediately started searching for some of the unique and interesting names in the data set.
Of course, there are those parents inspired by their favourite movies and shows — for instance, Tyrion, from the Game of Thrones, and Aragon, from the The Lord of the Rings, were names parents chose for their baby boys.
Baby girls were named Primm, from the Hunger Games trilogy; Cosette from Les Miserables; Wednesday from The Addams Family TV series; and Khaleesi from the Game of Thrones.
Plenty of parents took inspiration from place names, selecting Memphis, Oakland, Rome, Jasper, Boston, London, Montana, and Sydney for their boys.
Believe it or not, one baby boy got the unusual name of Thunderboy, and others were dubbed Huckleberry and Clarcksicnarf.
Baby girls also received some unique names, including Melon, Disney and Bandit.
For more unusual names we found on the list, check out our slideshow. You can also access more than 95,000 Alberta baby names by downloading the free Alberta Baby Names app.
