A Cape Breton couple say they forgive their granddaughter even though she stole $110,000 from their life savings and bought a swimming pool, a motorbike, clothes and drugs.
Aubrey Cameron, 84, said he stored his retirement fund in a cedar chest, but it went missing more than a year and half ago.
“I told the wife I said, ‘Well the money we were saving is gone,’” he said.
Barbara Cameron said first they were shocked, then angry.
The Camerons said they thought the money was safe in their home, until they learned their 27-year-old granddaughter and her boyfriend took the money
“It made me feel terrible,” said Barbara. “I couldn't believe they would do something like that to me.”
Jillian Cameron pleaded guilty to unlawfully being in a dwelling with the intent to commit theft.
Her boyfriend pleaded guilty to break and enter.
Close to $32,000 was recovered in the granddaughter's home and returned to the Camerons.
But the rest was gone.
Cameron said her granddaughter was mixed up with the wrong crowd.
“She said, ‘Nanny I am so sorry I did this. Please forgive us.’”
Most of their life savings are gone, but the grandparents say their granddaughter deserves a second chance
“I am just hoping that she will realize what she did to us and how she hurt us. She will end up maybe being a better person tomorrow,” said Barbara.
“I love her to death,” said her husband.
Jillian and her boyfriend with be sentenced next month.
