LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The day before the NHL awards, Carey Price filmed a skit with comedian host Rob Riggle where casino-goers in Las Vegas didn't recognize him. By the end of the night he wouldn't have gotten that same treatment.
"It might be a little different in the casino now, though," Price said after winning the Hart Trophy to cap off a historic night.
Price became the first goaltender since Jose Theodore in 2002 to win the Hart. The 27-year-old also won the Vezina Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award.
"For some reason everything just added up," Price said. "Things go right, the team plays well. Patrick (Roy) said the team wins, the goaltender gets recognition. But that team played very well in front of me. I've really got to thank those guys."
Price won the Hart in a rout, finishing far ahead of Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals and John Tavares of the New York Islanders.
The Lindsay Award represented Price's overall brilliance, but the Hart was a nod to just how valuable he was to the Canadiens. General manager Marc Bergevin didn't point out Price's 44 victories, 1.96 goals-against average or .933 save percentage on Wednesday night rather the goalie's reaction after Montreal was eliminated.
"He was shocked," Bergevin said in French. "Everything he did during the season didn't matter at that time. That is an example how a team player he is. The team always comes before him. That why I am sure that he will be able to keep going next season even if he can repeat everything he did last year."
