Vancouver's skyline could be getting its very own, real-life Jenga tower.

The 48-storey residential building, designed by Beijing-based, German-born architect Ole Scheeren, features several levels reaching outwards horizontally to fully "engage the space of the city," according to his website.

It's really quite something:

The building proposes 235 rental units in the heart of the city's coveted Coal Harbour neighbourhood, overlooking Stanley Park and the North Shore.

The outcroppings would act as terraces, allowing residents to maximize the massive, panoramic views of the city, parks, and waterfront. A big green space with pools and waterfalls would also be built at the base of the tower.

But it all remains on paper until the city approves the idea. A letter of inquiry was delivered to the City of Vancouver last week, which begins the process to obtain a development permit, reported The Globe and Mail.

Bosa Properties, the developer behind the project at 1500 West Georgia St., commissioned Scheeren to design the tower earlier this year.

"I wanted to create a truly livable residential space, in one of the world’s most livable cities," explained Scheeren to Wallpaper.

The architect's international work is notable. His China Central Television Headquarters was even referenced in an episode of The Simpsons.

The Telus Garden building, currently under construction in the city's west end. also has protrusions but not ones that are as striking as Scheeren's.
