Senate Audit Report Leaks Need To Be Investigated, Senator Urges

OTTAWA - Premature leaks of auditor general Michael Ferguson's damning report on senators' expenses has some senators seeing red.

Liberal Celine Hervieux-Payette has given notice that she intends to raise a question of privilege later today, asking Senate Speaker Leo Housakos to investigate the source of the leaks.

She argues that the leaks have undermined the fundamental right of senators named in Ferguson's report to the presumption of innocence and a fair and equitable defence.

Moreover, she says they've caused unheard-of damage to the institution and hampered the Senate's operations.

The contents of Ferguson's report, which was formally tabled today, began leaking almost immediately after he handed it to the Senate leadership last Thursday.

Hervieux-Payette is not among the 30 senators flagged by Ferguson for claiming ineligible expenses.
