An Edmonton man is dead after drowning in a creek along a popular hiking trail in Banff National Park.
Police say the 28-year-old man was hiking with friends at Johnston Canyon Sunday, and drowned in Johnston Creek.
A Parks Canada Search and Rescue team was called at approximately 4:45 p.m. on Sunday and RCMP were notified shortly after of a man unconcious in the water.
The body was recovered around 6 p.m.
Cpl. Chris Kosack of Banff RCMP told the Calgary Sun it's believed the man was looking for a way to cool off and jumped into the creek near one of the trail's lower waterfalls.
"He started to struggle, and was pulled under," Kosack said.
Cpl. Sharon Franks reminds hikers to be "mindful this time of year around water."
She told Global News the spring runoff is "increasing the amounts of water and the water is very cold."
RCMP say the incident is not suspicious, but they are investigating the man's death.
