Second Twin Gets Liver Transplant Through Anonymous Donor After 2 Months

The father of three-year-old Kingston, Ont., twins who underwent potentially life-saving liver transplants couldn't hold back tears as he thanked the anonymous donor who made the surgery possible for the second girl.

Michael Wagner could only donate part of his liver to his other daughter Phuoc and the family had appealed for a second donor for her twin sister Binh.

The family announced Monday that the surgery had taken place, but the timing is being kept secret to protect the donor's privacy. In a news conference Tuesday, Wagner expressed the family's gratitude to the stranger who "put their life on hold for someone they never met and changed our lives forever."

A doctor from Sick Kids hospital says Binh is recovering well despite experiencing some medical issues after the surgery. Phuoc went through the same surgery in February. The girls suffer from Alagille syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects vital organs, and doctors have said they would die without a liver transplant.

On Monday, a post on the family's Facebook page says Binh Wagner received her "gift'' from an anonymous donor.

And throughout the surgeries, Wagner and his wife kept the public updated through their community Facebook page with videos and photos.

After Phuoc's surgery, the family appealed for a second donor for Binh and nearly 500 people contacted Toronto General Hospital to offer parts of their liver to the little girl.

The changes in Phuoc were startling, Wagner told The Canadian Press last month. Her complexion was no longer a yellow hue.

"You can see the white of her eyes, we've never seen them,'' Wagner said.
