Wind Mobile Drops Spectrum Auction Bid

Wind Mobile is out of the race in the latest wireless spectrum auction after it failed to secure financing from its main shareholder, a move that will ensure none of the newer national entrants will be bidding for more bandwidth.

The company said Monday that it has withdrawn from the upcoming 700 MHz spectrum auction as foreign majority owner VimpelCom refused to fund its participation.

However a spokesperson for the wireless company said “it remains in discussions with the federal government and Wind Mobile’s other shareholder AAL Holding to craft a path forward that will continue to build Wind Mobile as a strong competitor in the Canadian wireless market.”

It was the only one among the three independent wireless companies that entered the Canadian market after the 2008 spectrum auction in the hopes of competing at the national level with the big three.

Public Mobile recently sold to Telus, and Mobilicity is under bankruptcy protection.
