WHAT WE'RE COOKING THIS WEEK: Pomegranate

They may be messy and a bit of pain to take apart, but pomegranates are worth the work. While they may be a popular holiday and summer fruit, we suggest adding more pomegranate seeds to your current fall menu. About 100 grams of pomegranate has 83 calories, 236 mg of potassium, four grams of fibre, and 17 per cent of your daily intake of vitamin C.

The fruit is also packed with vitamin K, polyphenols, and antioxidants, and tastes great with your favourite martini, salad, or soup. According to WebMD, studies have shown the fruit has been linked to improve blood flow to the heart and stop plaque from building up in your blood vessels. However, more research on its health benefits still needs to be conducted, the site notes.

As for the messiness of pomegranates, we have this handy guide on how to remove the seeds — and not get juice everywhere.

In case you missed it, last week we packed acorn squash.
