Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is scheduled to undergo an MRI exam on Friday to examine a “mass in the abdomen” identified by doctors as an abdominal tumour.

Dr. Zane Cohen, a renowned colorectal surgeon at Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital, offered an update on Ford’s condition at a news conference on Thursday.

“He is resting comfortably,” said Cohen. “He is in some discomfort. We have managed his pain.”

Cohen said doctors remain unsure about the exact type of tumour Ford has and refused to speculate on the subject.

“As a doctor, we don’t deal in possibilities,” he said. Details related to a prognosis were also not revealed. It remains unknown how long the mayor will be hospitalized.

Earlier, Ford was transferred to the downtown Toronto hospital for “follow-up investigation and subsequent treatment,” according to a statement.

“He’s in good spirits,” said Ford’s brother Coun. Doug Ford. “He’s keeping in good spirits.”

Ford suffered “unbearable” pain early Wednesday in his stomach which resulted to his admission to Humber River Hospital later that day. Doctors conducted a CT scan, revealing an abdominal tumour.

Humber River Hospital president Dr. Ruben Devlin spoke to reporters about the diagnosis and offered few details, but specified that it “wasn't a small tumour.”

Biopsy results are not expected for a week.
