Bras Do Not Cause Cancer: Study

Your bra will lift your breasts, support your back and make your cleavage looks its absolute best. But fortunately, according to a recent study, your bra will not give you cancer.

The study, published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, reported that for every one of the 1,500 post-menopausal female test subjects studied, there was no link between wearing a bra and getting breast cancer.

It didn't matter if the women wore underwire bras, wore their bras for a long period of time, how old they were or the size of their breasts: Wearing a bra did not correlate with signs of cancer.

The bra and breast cancer debate started around 20 years ago, when scientists noted breast cancer was unknown to the world until women started wearing bras, according to the Daily Mail.

There have also been myths concerning the underwire bra, claiming this type of bra is more likely to compress the lymphatic system of the breast, reports Health Magazine. These claims, however, have never been proven by science and there is no indication how you wear your bra or the type of bra you wear gives you cancer.

Researcher Lu Chen said although there isn't a plausible theory on why bras would increase the risk of cancer, she adds some people have come to this conclusion because developed countries have higher breast cancer rates — countries where women are more likely to wear a bra, she told USA Today.

While this report is meant to debunk this breast cancer myth, researchers said it's also important for women who do have breast cancer not to feel guilty or worried about wearing bras.
