A man has been charged with dangerous driving after a vehicle struck a seven-year-old girl who was riding her bike in Markham Friday afternoon.
At 4:56 p.m., police received a call about a collision near the intersection of McCowan Road and Coleraine Avenue.
In a statement released Saturday, York Regional Police said the girl was crossing westbound on McCowan Road in the company of a parent when she was struck by a southbound vehicle.
Paramedics rushed the child to Markham-Stouffville Hospital with life-threatening injuries, and she was later airlifted to Toronto’s SickKids Hospital for further treatment. She remained in critical condition on Saturday morning.
Police have not identified the driver, but said he remained at the scene after the collision.
An adult male now faces a dangerous driving charge in connection with the crash. He is scheduled to appear in a Newmarket court on Oct. 2.
Investigators are looking to speak with additional witnesses about the incident. People with information on the crash are asked to call York Regional Police’s collision investigation until at 905-764-1300 (ext. 7704) or contact Crime Stoppers at 416-222-8477.
