Charges have been laid in a bizarre home invasion in downtown Vancouver that led one resident to leap from a seventh floor balcony to escape.
Ira Matthew Winrob, 34, is facing charges of break and enter and unlawful confinement, after the bizarre home invasion on Davie Street between Bidwell and Denman streets on August 19.
In a press release, Const. Brian Montague described the home invasion as "brazen" and "targeted," saying the charges came as a result of a search and arrest carried out at another residence on August 27.
The home invasion shut down part of Vancouver's West End last Tuesday around 3: 30 p.m. PT after police received a report that a man with a gun had forced his way into a suite.
One resident escaped the suite by jumping from the balcony. He reportedly fell to the third floor and was sent to hospital with relatively minor injuries.
A second man turned up at a nearby restaurant asking for help, and two other people were found by police inside the building. None were injured in the ordeal.
The Vancouver Police Major Crime Section is continuing to investigate and Montague said the ongoing probe has already led to the recovery of two handguns and stolen property.
Winrob has no criminal record and is not known to police. He remains in custody until his next court appearance.
