More than 10,000 additional Toronto youths are living in low-income households as compared to just a few years ago, according to a new analysis by a group of social service agencies.
A forthcoming report has been jointly prepared by the Alliance for a Poverty-Free Toronto, the Children's Aid Society of Toronto, Social Planning Toronto, Ontario Campaign 2000 and Colour of Poverty — Colour of Change.
But the group has released some of the takeaways from tax data they have reviewed from 2012.
They report that 29 per cent of Toronto residents under the age of 18 are in households where the adjusted, after-tax income is no more than half the median after-tax income.
The percentage of youths living in low-income households had gradually declined between 2004 and 2010, but has since begun increasing again.
The report from the coalition is due to be released this fall.
