SYDNEY, N.S. - A Cape Breton MLA is in hospital with a serious infection.

The Progressive Conservative Party of Nova Scotia issued a statement on Saturday saying that Alfie MacLeod is receiving treatment at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney.

The 58-year-old represents the riding of Sydney River-Mira-Louisbourg.

MacLeod says in the statement that he is committed to resuming his MLA duties as soon as possible but that his health and family must come first.

He was first elected in 1995 and served as Speaker of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 2007 until 2009.

The statement did not provide details on the nature of his infection.
