A Niagara Region police officer is dead after a crash between a motorcycle and a car in Welland on Friday morning.
The collision occurred around 5 a.m. on a stretch of Highway 406 between East Main Street and Woodlawn Road, said Kerry Schmidt, a spokesman for the Ontario Provincial Police.
He said the motorcyclist, an off-duty male police officer, was pronounced dead at the scene. Paramedics airlifted the female driver to the hospital.
Schmidt said he had no more information on the identities of the victims.
He said the 406 is closed on East Main Street to Woodlawn Road for a police investigation into the crash.
“I don’t think it should take much longer, maybe a couple of hours,” Schmidt told CBC Hamilton around 8:15 a.m.
Niagara Regional Police spokesman Derek Watson wouldn’t comment on the OPP investigation, but said Police Chief Jeffrey McGuire will be issuing a statement on the crash later on Friday morning.
