A 14-year-old boy has been charged with attempted murder and weapons offences in the stabbing Saturday of a 19-year-old man along the Caribbean Carnival parade route in Toronto.

Toronto police also said Sunday that the 19-year-old, who was stabbed numerous times and received life-threatening injuries, is now in serious condition.

The stabbing occurred about 7 p.m. ET Saturday.

The Caribbean Carnival, known through its history as Caribana, is in its 47th year. It attracts revellers from around the world, and is one of the summer's biggest draws to Toronto. The parade is the marquee event of the three-week festival and winds along a 3.5-kilometre stretch of Toronto's Lakeshore Boulevard.

"An altercation took place between two parties (not specified if it was two individuals or groups) along the parade route," a Toronto Police Service release Sunday says.

The release says the 14-year-old is also charged with a couple of other offences, including a count of carrying a concealed weapon.

He is scheduled to appear in court at 10 a.m. ET Monday.

The name of the 19-year-old hasn't been released. The 14-year-old can't be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act..
