Montreal’s SPCA is hoping its “Operation Adoption” this weekend will find homes for at least 100 cats and 25 dogs abandoned during the city's recent moving period.

The initiative teams the SPCA with the City of Montreal and hopes to attract prospective pet owners with rebates on cat adoption costs and starter kits for dogs.

The deal is valid July 11, 12 and 13 at the Montreal SPCA’s two shelters and offers $50 off the normal adoption fee for a cat or a starter kit valued at $25 for those adopting dogs.

Cat adoption fees normally run from $75 for "compassionate adoptions" to $175 for kittens under five months.

Adoption fees include the first set of vaccinations, deworming treatment, a microchip, 15-day health guarantee and sterilization, which is mandatory for all adopted cats.

SPCA spokeswoman Anita Kapuscinska said this weekend’s adoption blitz is an important opportunity to meet prospective owners and inform them of the responsibilities that having a pet involves.

“It gives us a chance to talk to more people about what it takes to take care of an animal, we get to meet these people and go over this with every single person who comes and adopts an animal,” she said.

The City of Montreal says about 10,000 abandoned animals wind up euthanized every year.

The SPCA is hoping a new, low-cost sterilization clinic due to open next year will help reduce the number of unwanted cats and dogs.

The SPCA has two Montreal locations:

- Montreal SPCA – 5215 Jean-Talon West

- SPCA Annexe – 7314 Mountain Sights Ave (one block south of the SPCA).

Adoption clinic opening hours this weekend are:

- Friday, July 11: from noon to 8 p.m.

- Saturday and Sunday, July 12 and 13: from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
