The Toronto school where Joey Jeremiah jammed with the Zit Remedy and where Spike controversially carried a child out of wedlock is for sale.
The building that once housed Vincent Massey Public School, where Degrassi Junior High was filmed in the late 1980s, is for sale — but few people seem to be interested in buying the iconic building.
It was shut down as a public school in 1983, serving briefly as a private school before becoming the filming location for the second, and perhaps most famous, incarnation of the Degrassi TV series, which ran from 1987 to 1989.
Show co-creator Linda Schuyler taught at the school before making it the site of Degrassi Junior High, according to Curbed.com. (Toronto’s actual De Grassi Street is on the other side of town.)
And the building’s history with showbiz goes back farther than that: In the 1970s, it was used as a location in the Jack Nicholson movie “The Last Detail.”
For decades the building has served as a day care, but the Toronto District School Board has decided it’s overstock and is in the process of selling it. That has upset some parents who rely on the child-care facilities there.
“The community, made of many young families, will lose nearly 200 critical child care spaces, as well as vital green spaces that many residents enjoy,” the Save Vincent Massey Parent Council said in a statement last month.
But few people seem interested in actually buying the 2.7-acre site at 68 Daisy Ave.
According to the Etobicoke Guardian, only one party expressed interest in buying the property before a Dec. 4 deadline for public bidding, and that’s the city of Toronto itself.
Toronto is interested in “hiving off” a part of the property in order to save the day care facility, says the area’s city councillor, Mark Grimes, as well as the heritage building, which was built in 1929.
It’s not clear how much the city is prepared to pay for the property, and any purchase will depend on budget negotiations, which will only wrap up in February.
