The B.C. Teachers' Federation has confirmed schools on modified calendars will reopen next week, after a meeting of the union executive.

Executive members decided to accommodate the instructional needs of students in such schools, many of which are on year-round calendars.

Some of those schools were scheduled to open next week after the long weekend and following this decision, will now be able to do so.

However, the agreement won't impact summer schools, which the union has already announced teachers will be picketing.

School districts in Vancouver, Surrey, Langley and West Vancouver have said they will not be offering summer school courses as long as teachers remain on strike.

They have postponed the start of summer school to Monday, July 7 in case there's a settlement and say they will make a final decision Thursday, July 3. on whether to offer summer school courses.

In the meantime, the government has applied to the Labour Relations Board to have remedial summer school and five year-round elementary schools declared an essential service.

Both sides are awaiting a ruling which is expected soon.
