RCMP in Surrey, B.C., are looking for the driver of a silver Honda Accord that allegedly struck and killed 16-year-old Kevin Dhillon at the intersection of 96 Avenue and 123A Street just before 11 p.m. PT Tuesday.

Witnesses told police the motorcycle was travelling westbound on 96 Avenue when the Honda, which was travelling eastbound, turned left in front of the motorcycle.

Dhillon, who was from Surrey, was transported to hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Police say the Honda driver kept travelling north on 123A Street for one block before abandoning the vehicle and fleeing on foot.

Attempts to track the driver with a police dog were not successful, but police are attempting to contact the registered owner of the vehicle.

"Obviously, the vehicle and documents left behind provide our officers with physical evidence that will be crucial as we commence our investigation," said Cpl. Bert Paquet.

Candlelight vigil

Friends and family are holding a candlelight vigil in his memory tonight at Surrey's Holland Park.

A note on a Facebook page commemorating the event says, "Please everyone come out to honour Kevin tonight. He left us far too soon."

Police say because the driver fled the scene, the collision is now a criminal investigation.

"Once again, by leaving the scene of an accident, a driver has elevated a Motor Vehicle Act investigation to a criminal matter and will have to suffer the consequences of that decision.”

Anyone with any information about the collision or driver is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or, if they wish to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or online at http://www.solvecrime.ca/.
