Germany and Ghana both battled back from behind to force a well-earned 2-2 draw on Saturday in the teams' second Group G match at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
The match saw four goals in the second half. Mario Götze gave Germany the lead in the 51st minute before Ghana turned the match on its head with strikes from Andre Ayew and Asamoah Gyan.
That's before the eternal Miroslav Klose evened the match in the 71st minute to ensure both teams ended with a well-earned point.
Key play 1
This thrilling match was squared for the final time thanks to Klose's impeccable instincts in front of goal, managing to get his foot on a deflected ball to poke it past Fatawu Dauda, evening the score and entering the history books in the process (more on that later)
Key play 2
This match was so good we're adding a second key play. Ghana sent the crowd into a frenzy and gave itself a deserved lead when Sulley Muntari found Gyan with a pass on the break, sending the latter in alone on goal. Gyan, who infamously missed the penalty against Uruguay, made no mistake, sliding the ball past Manuel Neuer to give the Black Stars the lead and a good reason to dance.
Man of the Match
Sulley Muntari. The Ghana midfielder was dominant against Germany, and made the crucial pass to send Gyan in for the Black Stars' second goal.
Fast fact
Klose's marker is the 15th goal in his World Cup career. He is now tied with Brazil legend Ronaldo for the most career goals in World Cup history. Klose also became only the third player to score in four World Cups, joining Pele and fellow German Uwe Seeler.
What this means
Germany. After a marvellous performance against Portugal, this has to be considered a step back for the Germans. Ghana gave Die Mannschaft everything they could handle and then some, and Germany could've easily lost the match. Another difficult match awaits the Germans against the U.S. on Thursday (CBC TV, cbc.ca/fifaworldcup, Noon ET) in their final game of Group G. They may need a win in that one to advance to the Round of 16.
Ghana. Two fine performances have only earned Ghana one point in two matches. But the Black Stars are still alive in Group G, though they absolutely need a win against Portugal on Thursday (CBC TV, cbc.ca/fifaworldcup, Noon ET) to have any hope of advancing.
