A man attempting to steal nearly $1,500 in high-end jackets was caught after being struck by a vehicle as he fled the scene of the robbery, Toronto police said Saturday.
The would-be thief, who was taken to hospital with a serious leg injury following the collision, was being chased down Yonge Street by an employee of the store from which he stole the coats around 5:30 p.m. ET when a car slammed into him near Queen Street.
The vehicle fled the scene of the accident, but was later apprehended at the corner of Front Street West and Yonge Street. Police said the driver is in custody for failing to remain at the scene and a passenger of the car is facing drug possession charges.
Police said charges are pending for the male who was hit by the vehicle, and he remains in hospital for treatment.
