A team of ill or injured Canadian soldiers have begun their relay trek to Parliament Hill for Friday’s National Day of Honour, starting in Trenton, Ont.

The group of 19 soldiers will make the 290-kilometre trip and stop at communities along the way to thank Canadians for their support during the tour of duty in Afghanistan.

The soldiers are also carrying a specially constructed baton that holds the last Canadian flag to fly at ISAF Headquarters in Kabul.

The flag will be presented to Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Friday.

In total, 158 Canadian soldiers lost their lives during Canada's military mission in Afghanistan.

You can hear more about the trek in the video interview above.
