Serge Simon has been handed his second term as grand chief of Kanesatake.
Saturday's election came five months earlier than originally scheduled, after Simon's first term was wrought by internal administrative strife that often undermined his decision-making power as grand chief.
He received 390 votes, a comfortable lead over opponents Sonya Gagnier (86 votes) and Robert Gabriel (68 votes).
Six chiefs were also elected to the new band council: John Canatonquin, Gloria Ann Nelson, Lourena Montour, Bruce Montour, Patricia Meilleur and Victor Bonspille.
The previous council was often paralyzed in its decision-making because the majority of the chiefs on band council often did not support Simon. However, four of the dissidents from the last council were not re-elected.
Simon campaigned on the promise of revisiting the community’s governance model.
Elections in Kanesatake are rarely popular. Just 27 per cent of the 2,034 eligible voters cast a ballot on Saturday, down from the 30 per cent in the 2011 election.
