No one was injured when a Vancouver Police Department wagon transporting a prisoner ended up on its side in a Downtown Eastside intersection early Sunday morning.
Const. Brian Montague said the police wagon was heading north on Gore Street at Hastings Street at 5:45 a.m. PT, when it was struck in the intersection by a car heading west.
The wagon was pushed across into the oncoming lane on Gore, and tipped over onto its side.
"The officer driving the wagon had to kick out the front windshield to exit. Officers then climbed on top of the turned over wagon and removed the prisoner inside," Montague said in a written statement.
The department says the prisoner was taken to hospital as a precaution. Neither the prisoner, the officer behind the wheel, nor the man driving the westbound car were injured, Montague said.
Police believe the wagon had entered the intersection on a green light, he said.
The investigation is ongoing.
