A bus driver has been charged with distracted driving after a collision on Friday that left two players and a parent from a Markham hockey team in hospital.
The crash happened at around 9 a.m. on Highway 401 approximately 20 kilometres east of Woodstock, Ont., and led to minor delays for westbound traffic while debris was cleared off the roadway.
Ontario Provincial Police told CBC News on Saturday that distracted driving was alleged to be the cause of the bus hitting a median on the road.
"The barrier has saved a lot of lives," said OPP Traffic Sgt. Shawn Kivil. "Years ago we had a grass median in that section here in Oxford County and a lot of times there would be some vehicles that would cross over into the other lane of traffic."
The Markham Majors hockey team had been on their way to a tournament in Ohio when the bus driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle.
The CBC's Travis Dhanraj said a parent on board then quickly grabbed the wheel and managed to regain control of the bus.
The GM of the Majors Randy Jacobs confirmed the crash caused the bus to tip on its side.
Jacobs said one player from the team suffered a shoulder injury while another person on board had head injuries.
Altogether two players, as well as a parent, were taken to a local hospital and have since been released.
The Majors made it to Ohio for the tournament and will be returning back to Toronto on Sunday.
Police have not released the name of the driver or bus company.
