The City of Toronto has issued an extreme cold weather alert — meaning warming centres and other services are open to the homeless.

The temperature is expected to drop to to -16 C overnight. Sunday will also be cold — the expected high of -6 C will feel more like -25 C with the wind chill.

Extra services provided during extreme cold weather alerts include a relaxation on service restrictions at shelters and city agencies and providing TTC tokens at some drop-in centres so people can use public transit to get to shelters.

A pilot program has since January also seen Metro Hall serve as a warming centre.
