Multiple reports suggest Chrysler will announce where it will build its next generation minivan within the next 48 hours.

The choice could save thousands of well-paying jobs in southern Ontario.

The Automotive News and Wall Street Journal both reported early Tuesday that company CEO Sergio Marchionne is close to making the company's decision public.

Marchionne had asked both the Ontario and Canadian governments for financial assistance in retooling its Windsor assembly plant, where the minivan is made.

Marchionne said the company was planning to spend a combined $2 billion on upgrades in Windsor and at a Brampton assembly plant.

If the money is spent in Ontario, it would secure 4,600 hourly jobs in Windsor and nearly 3,000 in Brampton.

According to a report by Dave Guilford in the Automotive News, Marchionne said he thinks "it will become evident over the next 24 to 48 hours that we have taken a position, and life will go on."

Unifor Local 444 president Dino Chiodo, who represents workers in Windsor, said he had not heard of the reports and could not confirm whether Marchionne has made a decision.

Unifor spokesperson Stuart Laidlaw said the same.

Unifor executives are currently meeting in Port Elgin, Ont.

Chrysler Canada had no comment to CBC Windsor.
